It's commonly believed that the "fertile time" is the 14th day before your next period starts. However, recent research has shown that women can in fact occasionally ovulate (release an egg) any time. This happens randomly, and cannot be predicted. The researchers did ultrasounds every day to monitor development of the eggs and when the were release, but unless you have access to ultrasound equipment daily and the right training, you'll never know for sure.

Yes, the odds are that ovulation happens on schedule, except for some younger girls, and women with interesting medical conditions - but they're still "odds", which means you're gambling.

Is a 3% chance of getting pregnant acceptable? Read some of the posts here and on other health sites; some women will tell you they've become pregnant any different time of their cycle, including DURING their period.

Yes. The luteal phase of your cycle, when you are fertile, has a varying time length and there is no guarantee, from month to month, that it will end at a particular date. It is generally safest to assume you are fertile from the start of ovulation (about 14 days after menstruration starts, though not necessarily exactly) until you start menstruating again. The *best* way to determine if you are fertile is by taking your body temperature regularly; there will be a 0.5-1 degree C rise in body temperature during the fertile phase compared to normal. The only point where you're pretty much safe from pregnancy is while you're actually menstruating.

YES! you can get pregnant during your menstration period, after, before...whenever. Gosh, I was taking birth control pills on a daily basis, same time every day, taking no drugs or nothing that would interfere with them, and ended up pregnant. Dont get me wrong, I am very happy, but having sex is not something to mess around with if you dont plan on dealing with the consequences. Make sure to use protection - condoms, spermicides, birth control...whatever works for you.

i love pregnancy questions. You can get pregnant ANY time you have sex. Sure, there are times of the month based on each woman's cycle that increase the chances of pregnancy, but just because you are not within that window does not mean that you cannot get pregnant. I never tell anyone not to have sex, because, as animals, it is in our nature. However, as in any activity or any aspect of our lives, there are times and places for it, and always think ahead.
