i lived in wales for 5 years, i'm english. the welsh are great people but sometimes they go a bit overboard on the national heratige thing. personaly i thinks it's because welsh is a dying launguage but they want to preserve it. this seems to be the biggest conversation piece in wales. truth is it doesn't have a place in the modern world because unless your brought up speaking it, it can't be learned. the sentence construction rules are incredably hard if not imposable to learn and no matter how much you speak somebody will put you down for speaking it wrong, even if your trying to learn. that is the problem. they don't want people to be there unless there welsh, but unfortunatly for them, the world doesn't work like that. Plad cymru are a bunch of jokers who do more damage to the country than help it.
going back to what a previous answerer stated, they where once a major part in the world (coal) but not anymore. they don't have anything to give to the world accept their history, until the recognise that and move on there problems and there view of the rest of the world will only get worse.

Being welsh myself this explanation is an easy one, it stems from the days when wales was riddled with functioning coal mines we were at one time the most economically stable country in europe half of the worlds coal came from here we apparently took so much pride in our strength as a nation it has been instilled in each generation to be proud of who you are and where you come from, it is written in celtic lore that to be born welsh is a privelage. Most of the time we're the forgotten country everybody knows where Ireland england and scotland are nobody remembers us 'we were wiped of the European map a few years ago!!!' until somebody said hey wait a minute wheres wales? The true welsh ancestry comes from a long line of celtic warriors (anybody remember boudica?) we stand up for what we beleive in and that is where we come from everbody forgets about us so why shouldnt we boast about being welsh, after all if it wasn't for us nobody would driving cars today (we invented the steam engine) and for nobody who knows his name it's richard trevithick We're welsh and proud of it, anymore questions?

And wot's wrong with that? I think other parts of the UK can learn from that example, especially England, then we'd not have so much unhappiness.
(No, I'm not Welsh.)
