today i woke up with this pain under both of my rib cages and it radiates to my sides and sometimes my back...it gets worse when i walk and i think because of pressure, and sometimes when i inhale, and it felt better after resting for awhile.for the past couple of weeks i had this pain where when i breathed in there was a rly sharp pain on my left side of my chest like at the top of my ribs almost...this usually would last about a few minutes then go away and i got it 2-3 times a day then a couple days ago i got it and it lasted about 6 hours or so, but i woke up the next day and didnt get it at all(this was yesterday)then i woke up this morning with this...i dont know if thats related or not, but if anyone could help me with what this could be that would be helpful, thanks (:
(and im a 14 year old girl and i dont think i have any medical problems other than an acidic stomach)

Nervous stomach. Somewhat related to GERD, but lower in the system.
The acidic stomach is the real problem. Go ahead and do something about it NOW. Longterm it can create some serious problems, but I really mean long-term, so you don't have to go to emergency room, rather make a regular appointment.

It doesn't sound like an emergency, but deserves to be looked into, so the history is on your doctor's charts, so if future problems develop, the doc has a record of your history.

Addendum: Appendix and heart problems are usually on one side of the body. Yours is not appendix, and not likely to be a heart problem. It wouldn't hurt to be checked out for an ulcer, but like I said, it's probably nervous stomach.

I have sharp pains under both rib cages. A couple of years ago I had the same pain and it was kidney stones traveling from my kidneys to my bladder. I went to the ER a couple of days ago. They said I had a lot of stones but they were all in my kidneys. The pain is bad but not as bad as it was before my non-working gallbladder was removed. My heart is in excellent condition. I have no appendix and no female organs. They did find a bladder infection and mild constipation. They said go see my family doctor, I'm 62 years old, 25 lbs. over weight. I have a herniated disc on my tailbone, sciatica, and diverticulitous.Anybody got any answers??

Is there any possible way that this could be associated with asthma? Sounds a little like my sons ailments when he had broncitis.Maybe this will be worth looking into. Good luck and I hope and pray you feel much better real soon!!

i was going to say symptoms of myocardial infarction but seeing as your 14 thats fairly unlikely. If the pain persists describe the pain to a doctor's office over the phone or make an appointment. (acidic stomach stomach is also a doubtful cause so my best advice is to make an appointment w/ a doctor soon)

i doubt the throat thing has anything to do with the previous symptoms, but like i said see a doctor to be sure. its a pain in the *** but it's better to see if it's something especially if you can catch it before it becomes worst. on top of that every little agitation you feel will be amplified by your mind. it is human nature to think that an illness or ailment is continually getting worst even if threes nothing wrong with them.you will probably continue to think your pain is getting worst or that more symptoms are coming on until you get the whole thing cleared by your physician.
good luck

oh god! thats what had happened to me dear. i rushed to the hospital and i fear that i have some sort of attack. well those rib pains was diagnosed as costochondritis.iot will last for about 3 mos. up to a year if it is inflamed. well, dear a pain reliever will do. dont panic.

What is costochondritis (Tietze's Syndrome)?
Costochondritis is a syndrome of chest wall pain that is due to inflammation of the cartilage and bones in the chest wall. Also called Tietze's Syndrome, costochondritis occurs when there is inflammation at the junction of the rib bone and breastbone (sternum). At this junction, there is cartilage joining these bones. This cartilage can become irritated and inflamed. Depending on the extent of the inflammation, this condition can be quite painful.

What causes costochondritis?
Most commonly the cause of costochondritis is classified as 'idiopathic,' or unknown. This means that there is no identifiable cause for the condition. This does not imply that idiopathic costochondritis is any less painful of a condition than if the cause can be identified. The most frequently affected age group is young adults between 20 and 40 years old.

What are the symptoms of costochondritis?
The most common symptom is pain over the front of the upper chest (the area of the sternum). Because of serious conditions, most importantly conditions related to heart problems, costochondritis should only be diagnosed after excluding other more serious problems.

Costochondritis pain is usually worsened by activity or exercise. One of the most common symptoms is that the pain is present when taking a deep breath. This stretches the inflamed cartilage and can cause exquisite pain. Often simply touching the area involved will be extremely painful for the patient.

Because of the many nerves that branch away from the chest, pain may be experienced in the shoulder or arms as well. When called Tietze's Syndrome, the pain is accompanied by redness and or swelling in the areas most tender.
