Yes. If I were fired, or in some way lost my job, I would want all the help I could get. I'd need the blessings that come from paying an honest tithe, especially if I'd just lost my job.

Dear aj,
very good question. First we have to understand that God is a God filled with love and compassion. The command to tithe is so that we would recgonize that everything that we have comes from God. Also it supports the work that God is doing. God does tell us that he loves a cheerful giver (that is the heart with which we give with). He cares most about our heart.
I would advise you to trust God even in the midst of rough circumstances (i went throught his dilemma) when i first got out of college and was struggling and God has provided abundantly.
i guess what i'm saying is that ultimately what you tithe is between you and God. The Bible teaches that we ought to honor God in all things- and tithing would most definitely display a trust in God. The way your question is asked seems to paint God as a cruel God who wants to see you starve to get your 10%- He loves you, knows everyone's situation, and is able to help.
Hope that helps- feel free to email if you have a more specific situation you'd like to share.

Would a farmer eat his seed if he wants to plant a crop for next year. You tithe is your seed. Plant it and expect a harvest in a new job that pays even better than the one you just had. Your faithfulness will be rewarded when it is done with the right heart attitude. It is a step of faith on your part.

Not if you belong to my ELCA Lutheran Church. One guy lost his job and he and his family where really struggling. Every day one of us would take them lunch or supper. The congregation bought food and gas. They chipped in and made a house payment. He eventually got a great job, and now returns the favor by helping others in distress.

According to most Christian faiths you are supposed to pay your tithes from EVERYTHING you earn. Personally, I think that God would prefer you to be self sufficient first and to support the clergy second.

Why not give the money to charity or towards medical research instead? And why not do it on your own schedule, according to your ability. Who told you that your god needs the money?

You should give because it is God's and by being obedient He will provide a way to get your needs met. You should really pay offerings too because that's the multiplier.

I'm sure God would greatly honor the sacrifice you make of giving that 10%, yes I would give it. It comes back to you multiplied.
