I have been taking TRAMADOL for almost 3 years and i'm not addicted. I have bad arithritis and this is the only thing that helps. Sometimes when I'm off of work I don't use it.

Yes and no or even maybe. There appears to be no straight forward answer. BNF.org does not stress dependency, but links this drug to morphine which clearly does. Manufacturers say that the potential for addiction is low. However, we must consider that there can be both physical and psychological dependency. When used in treatment of chronic pain, if it relieves the pain, how would you feel if it was suddenly withdrawn. I have taken 400mg daily in divided doses, for some years. On the odd occassion I have run out, and I tend to feel bad. This may be due to increased pain levels rather than withdrawal though. Consider this as well. In the treatment of chronic pain, does addiction matter that much?

Yes it is.

Take this medication by mouth as prescribed. It is usually taken every 4 to 6 hours as needed.

Use this medication exactly as prescribed. Do not increase your dose, use it more frequently or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed because this drug can be habit-forming. Also, if used for an extended period of time, do not suddenly stop using this drug without your doctor's approval.

When used for extended periods, this medication may not work as well and may require different dosing. Consult your doctor if the medication stops working well.

it can be if used regular. You are best to use it a few days and then try go without it if you can. If the pain is too much then carry on as obviously still needed, but DONT just stop taking it if you are on a high dose for long time always ask your G.P for advise. My husband was weaned off gradually. It's easier that way if you find you do get withdrawal symptoms.

If you're addicted to it, the you're on the wrong medication. When doctors prescribe analgesics they should start from a non opiate moving upwards only if the pain is not being controlled properly!
