The difference between "mum" and "mom" is just a dialectal one --American English descended from British dialects which used the latter.

The SPELLING issue of -our words is a separate one. Most of these words go back to Latin words that did not have the u --the u was added in French, from which English borrowed the words. But the "u" has no effect on the pronunciation in English.

For this reason, many in the late 18th century and early 19th century advocated changing the spelling to remove the u. Those who did so in England were unsuccessful (the aristocracy, which was more conservative about such things, essentially dictated this). On the other hand, when the American educator Noah Webster advocated this change is was accepted (since there was no elite class/aristrocracy to oppose it).

Note that Webster did NOT suggest this spelling change to "be different" or tweak the British, but for practical reasons.

What an imbecile observation! Who answer to imbecile questions is at the same level an imbecil.

Ok, let me answer this questions: yes, Americans do not like letter "u" because letter "u" is not liked by the Americans. (A circle answer).

I'm doubly imbecile because I wrote here and spend time here as an imbecile writing about an imbecile question and answering to it as an imbecile. Therefore, I am a real imbecile, imbecile.

I don't know why we don't use the 'u'. Although, if you spelled "mom" like you spell "colour", would it be "moum"?
