If your first thought is to call me a complete whack job then what makes any other prophet a truth teller? Why believe one person over another? Is it the message or the messenger?

I just want to state that I asked an "IF" question - I did not receive an epistle from anyone and am not about to start my own church of the holy gospel according to Leela. - I am looking for undersatnding to the mindset of why one would take Joseph Smith's word for it or any of the others from days gone by - oh and the apostles were not writing daily journals in real time and their books are in fact written many many years after the "fact".

The only truth I can tell you is that I TRULY believe "god" told me that religion is man's evil and not to get involved.

If you wrote a sensible, compelling gospel that sounds like the word of God (whatever that means) I would take it for what it's worth just like I do with other scriptures. But mine is the minority opinion. Some people want to place a gag order on God's word and say that God can't talk anymore even though every message from God in history has come through a human being. Why should things change?
So, yes Leela. I would be happy to read your message from God and there are probably others like me.

It's both the message and the messenger. Many people claim to be spiritual leaders. Most aren't. You know a true prophet by his fruits, whether they are good or evil. And you know it by the witness in your heart.
Take Joseph Smith for example. The founder of the Mormon church. He founded a church that has achieved tremendous things. It has grown by leaps and bounds amid the worst kind of persecution any religion in America has ever faced. He translated the Book of Mormon, which millions accept as the word of God and which has elevated the lives of millions. These are good fruits. Those are some of the reasons why I accept him as a true modern-day prophet.

I don't. The bible is a wonderful story with many helpful advice for life. But a factual account, a gospel. I find that difficult to believe. It's like the South Park where Joseph Smith reads the Mormon text from iside a hat and he is the only one who can see it. It's hard to believe. But that's where faith comes in. Faith chases logic away and never lets it return. Just don't ask questions and faith will reign supreme.

Yes Leela I would because the same thing happened to me and I still have the letter to prove it. God comes to us Leela in number of ways through scripture, through others, also through his still small voice if we stop and be still and really listen for it. You are not a whack. you are chosen by God to do what all the authors of the Bible were inspired to do. We are after all messengers of God's word and whether it be through our voices, or through the pen it is spreading God's word

First, the canon is closed (Rev 22:18-19). Second, we are called upon to test everything in light of Scripture. If your message is in sync with God's word, then I would accept it, but only because it is in line with the Bible.

It depends what the letter says. I don't believe that god spoke to you. But every prophet/messenger has a purpose. Their purpose can be to lead people to a better life, or it can be for their own gains.
Its not whether god spoke to you, and it isn't even whether you believe he did or not.
It is whether your message is important or not.

It only matters what you believe in. I'm a practicing witch,i believe in magick and spells. for me this is truth, for others it may not be.But it dose not matter to anyone but me. I don't criticize any ones religion nor do i try to convert or prove my righteousness and beliefs on anyone. My father used to tell me that there is but one truth but many paths to take

God said many will come in My name. You have to be spirit led to the right prophet. There are some that claim to be prophets too.

when you spend your life showing perseverance and dedication through out your life time. when you keep coming back for more abuse after years and years of telling us this message and being called crazy and insane , then and only then will you have the same credibility of the prophets.
