Sounds like a ridiculous question, I know. I'm really out of shape (not fat, just out of shape) and I start Rugby workouts on Tuesday. I need a way to strengthen my arms to help out with doing pushups.

Any ideas?

Honestly the best exercise would be push-ups themselves. What you can do at first is to practice holding the top portion of the push-up position. As your strength increases you should increase the range of motion gradually, until you are doing full push-ups or kneeling push-ups. Changing the hand placement will also help develop different aspects of the same muscle groups needed for a push-up. Give yourself about 48 between each workout to recover properly until you get better conditioned. Go for 2 to 4 sets at first and if your technique starts to weaken then you should stop. Using perfect form will help you over time instead fo "squeezing" out a few extra sloppy push-ups. Remember to not hold your breath during exertion, because it will raise your blood pressure too much. I highly recommend doing a whole-body workout so that you develop balanced strength throughout your whole body, not just your chest and shoulders.

Well, pushups really targets your chest, shoulders, and a little bit of your triceps, so normal weightlifting might not be what you're looking for.

I will tell you right now, the best way to get better at pushups is to do them as often as you can. At least once or twice a day just take a couple minutes to do some pushups, do as many as you can in one go, even if it's only like 5. Each day try gradually increasing the number of pushups you do. It may not seem like very fun, but you can actually gain a decent amount of strength from just doing this.
I was able to just about triple what I was capable of by doing this, i was pretty impressed.

You can start by just getting into the push up position it self. Hold it as long as you can. Also you can get down on your knees and slowly lower your self and just push your self up and down. If this is still hard for you to do then you may also try wall push ups. Put hands against the wall with your arms strait drop towards the until your nose almost touches the wall then just push up do as many as you can. As you get stronger try the other exercises until you able to perform the regular push up. Good luck

I'm not a fitness expert (as a matter of fact, I could do with some ab workouts) but I'm pretty sure push-ups are a matter of shoulder/upper-arm strength. So, yeah, check for websites that give you specific exercises like that in detail...I'd do that myself, but my browser's acting up...

mmmm.

get some charts about arm workout.

that'll help you a little.

But since push-ups workout your chest it will be better to work out some part of your chest that will be easier then push-ups.

If your a girls you boobs will get little and hard.

it takes time to build muscle. Building your arms, doesn't mean your going to be able to do more push ups. Push ups are done using your chest and your tricep muscles.
