What is most likely causing his gas is what you are feeding him. Try changing the type of cat food you are giving him.

I hate to answer a question with a question, but I can't help it...Is this gassy thing a new problem? How old is the cat? What are you feeding him? Does he get treats? What kind? Does he go outside? Could he have gotten into something that made him sick?
My cat is 7 years old, male, neutered; if he started to have this problem now, I would change his food. (My answer would be the same if it were a young cat that is new to the home). I would get a rice-based food from Petsmart and slowly transition him over the period of a couple weeks to the new food. I would also stop giving him any treats during this time. Some cats have problems digesting certains meats and grains. Rice and lamb based foods seems to work well for them.
In the meantime, watch him for signs of illness: lethargy, not eating, drinking, spiked fever, vomiting, loose stool or suddenly eliminating outside the litter box. If you see any of these symptoms arise he should probably be taken to the vet to see if there is an intestinal blockage or other physical affliction causing the problems.
Good luck.

Any food changes should be done gradually, but generally you should feed the best quality food that your cat does well on, you can reasonably afford, and reliably obtain. Generally, anything you get in a pet shop will be better than supermarket food. For more about feeding, see this page:

Avoid sudden food changes and treats, which can cause this trouble. Giving your cat some active cultures yogurt or acidophulus supplements may help. Getting a stool exam done at your vet for worms, coccidea, and giardia can also be very helpful as these intestinal parasites can induce gas and cause poor absorption.

I agree with Kchivers. Most inexpensive cat foods can be up to 2/3 corn -- very indigestible and unuseable for cat nutrition.
All dry foods have to have "filler" for the manufacturing process. Get a premium food which uses brown rice, rice, pea, etc. As to how to switch foods click on my name in the icon. Directions are there. Gradual is the key so that there is no tummy upset or diarrhea.
Science Diet is not a premium food, just more expensive than other crap.

Switch to a premium quality food. I swear by Iams, have for years. AND NO table scraps, those are for people!
If your cat is under a year it may just be part of the magic of grownig up. Some cats just go through a stinky stage as their systems mature.

You need to change the food you feed him. Many of the varieties of food available at regular stores contain high amounts of grain in the mixture. You should feed your pets foods primarily made of protein (grain should be a secondary ingredient). I learned this lesson the hard way. My husband (then boyfriend) got to cats and he started feeding them friskies... UGH!!!! Bad gas and smelly litterbox was the result. I asked a friend that was a vet and he recommended changing food fast.

Change the food, cat's can not digest carbohydrates, they need a food high in Protein. I feed my cat raw meat, and then some high protein dry biscuits on the side.
Have a look at http://www.holisticat.com/rawdiet.html
