My daughter is 16 months and just started walking 1 month ago. We still have her in soft soled shoes. When is the right time to move on to hard soled shoes? Thank you

Most people think that kids need the hard soles for support and also something high top to support the ankles, but actually they do much better barefoot, and that helps the arches develop better. Also, it makes the ankles stronger because they are not dependent on outside support from the shoes. Hard soled shoes are great for outside, anytime you are wearing them yourself, when she might step on something painful. Otherwise, keep her barefoot or in soft shoes inside.

Right now is the right time.
Pediatricians say that really they should only wear hard soled shoes when they are outside, otherwise not wearing any shoes is best when they are just learning to walk. I think it has to do with there little toes helping them maneuver better without shoes restricting them.

Forget the walking shoes. Hardly anyone buys them anymore. I was told by my pediatrician that a good sneaker is fine instead of those hard soled shoes, especially those that are high topped. Ever see a kid walk in those, they are lead footed and plop along because they do not give. We were made with arches so that our foot could give when we walk. So stick with sneaks or a sandal.

I agree with everyone else. The best time is when they show signs that they are going to start walking. They need that extra support that hard soled shoes will give them.

I would put her in hard soled shoes now since she is walking. I hope you have your house child proofed! They get in to sooooooo much more stuff once they start walking because they can reach more things than they could when they were crawling!

We bought my daughter "walking" shoes almost as soon as she started walking. I think they need the arch support, but that could just be a sales gimmick to get you to buy expensive shoes. Since fall is coming, I'd definately switch your daughter to hard-soled shoes.

She should have been in them since you were teaching her how to walk, at least do it now. Get shoes which support ankles as weel as the insoles (careful about those - not many kinds have the inside support)

When she starts walking outside where she could step on something she shouldn't. Children do not need ankle or arch supports, babies all over the world learn to walk barefoot and are fine. Let their ankles and arches learn to support themselves and not rely on footware to do it.

Now is the time dear. I wouldn't spend a small fortune on them since her little feet will probably be ready for a new pair in only a month or two. Another milestone..... love it while you can!
