Sheesh, I've taken 8 hour road trips hundreds of times to my folks' house. Just try to be rested when you start. I used to start after a day at work! (stupid, stupid, but I was 24). Develop a liking for coffee, fast. Those drinks like Amp work pretty well (somebody said Red Bull, but I don't care for that one). And listening to some really annoying AM talk radio is good. You can get so peeved at the call-in idiots you won't feel like sleeping at all. If all else fails, look for a safe rest stop and take a snooze, but be careful. One other little thing-- an eight hour drive really dries out my eyes--you tend to blink less, so get some Visine or something like that.

Lots and lots of cool, yummy... water. Really. You WILL have to stop and pee, but you would anyway, on an 8 hour road trip. The water will help you keep hydrated; good not only because people get sleepy when they're dehydrated, but also because it's almost impossible to sleep when you have to pee.

Try to have some fresh fruits and veggies to snack on too - these are much less "sleep-inducing" foods than, say, munching on a bag of chips. Do make sure you eat proper meals - just don't stuff yourself.

Finally - a book on tape (well, CD, probably) is always great - my hubby and I listened to The Godfather on a 12 hour road trip, and were riveted. These are pricey, but I'll bet your local library lends them out.

8 hours you should be ok. Take a break four hours after being on the road. Eat and walk around for a while.

keep the radio on - a good time to develop an ear for heavy metal music. i usually have some kind of sugar snack also, but not chocolate. try and keep your mind occupied. figure out howe far you've gone and how far you have left. stuff like that

I always drink lots of coffee. If you start to doze you may need to turn the radio on, sing, or even slap yourself in the face. Do whatever you have to do not to fall asleep!

play the radio or music in the car really loud, then you won't be able to fall asleep as the noise will keep you awake. good luck.
