A: The castor bean plant is the most deadly of all plants. Eat a single castor bean, or perhaps two if you're an adult, and you'll die — maybe. If you live beyond three to five days, you will probably survive.

Ricin contained in the castor bean is twice as toxic as cobra venom; ricin is a glycoprotein in two chains. Only one is toxic. The Merck Index says ricin is most effective as i.v. or inhaled as fine particles.
Aconite is a helluva poisonous plant. Aconitine is the toxic alkaloid, causing cardiac depression in minimum lethal doses less than an order of magnitude from ricin.
Belladona, containing atropine. Jimson weed and henbane, containing the very similar hyoscyamine are extremely toxic.
These atropine/hyoscyamine plants were used by "witches" in European rituals. Atropine alkaloids are extremely dangerous to use as hallucinogens. The ratio of lethal dose to effective dose can be as low as 2:1 !! Nevertheless, in much smaller doses, the anticholinergic properties of these drugs are very useful.
Foxglove (digitalis) is an intense cardio-poison/drug.
Chondrodendron species are the source of Curare, a powerful muscle relaxant (deadly powerful).
Ergot, fungus on Rye and source of LSD alkaloids, can make one mighty sick.

The best known toxic plant is the deadly nightshade, or belladonna ("beautiful woman" in Italian). The berries, leaves, and roots are all poisonous. Eating one leaf can kill an adult, while the berries are dangerously appealing to children with their glossy skin and sweet taste.
