My brother has a little girl and has wanted nothing to do with her for 4 years and now he is married and tries to get his daughter to want to stay with him but she screams and cries. As a result she gets spanked a good bit. She has been living with my parents this entire time and now all of a sudden he wants her all the time. (because of his wife) I don't know how to help the situation and I hardly ever get to see her anymore! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the tranistions better?

I would do activities that your parents and your brother and his wife can do together. Go to the zoo, the park, the beach. Have dinner out together. It's going to take a lot, but if he wants to have any kind of relationship with his daughter, he is going to have to make a serious effort into it. Talk to his daughter about him, BE POSITIVE. Good luck to your family

I didn't notice the spanking part the first time. If he hits her, all bets are off. Tell him that and see what he does.

Wow, the poor thing gets spanked for being scared of a man she barely knows. I'm sure that is the best way to reassure any child. Way to go dad. I'm sorry, if he wanted to choose when he was ready to be a father, he should have thought of that 4 years ago. Just because he is ready does not mean she is. Dad needs to relax and realize she needs some time to get to know him.

Ohhh honey this is a very scary situation. I know exactly how your feeling. If you and the little girl are close you try taking her over there a few days a week and maybe you and the whole family can go do things instead of throwing the little girl in a home where she hardly knows anyone, even though he is the daddy.

I can't believe what I have just read - you say that your niece gets spanked a good bit, because of her father's behaviour. Who does the spanking ? This is so WRONG. As her aunt you have a duty to protect her from such evil. Sod your brother my only concern is the treatment of this innocent little girl.

He should try letting her come to him first, instead of forcing her. If he continues to punish her for not wanting nothing to do with him, then he will only turn her further away. I understand him wanting to spend time with her that he missed, but there are better ways to get her to get to know him. That is about it, let her have her space and make the decision about when she wants to let him into her life. Best of luck!

This is a really tough problem. Is there a possibility that your
mother or father could talk to him. He should realize that the child
is not comfortable with someone that she doesn't know, then he
tries to correct her with spankings?? I wish you much luck with
this situation.
