Here is my two cents.
I think that tropical themes are played out. Too many people do them. I would want to be original and think of something different.
When I get married I want a (subtle) Snow White theme. The story is a German fairytale, so I want to have Bavarian decor, colors, etc. If I had my choice I would have the reception in a local German restaurant.
I also like the idea of taking an object and themeing from that. For instance, peacock feathers are beautiful. How about taking colors from them (green, blue, chocolate, black) and then placing feathers in key things (bouquet, centerpieces, etc).

I do not believe in wedding themes. Weddings are sacred not a party. Themes can be done for reception though I am a traditional kind of person. I think beach weddings have been overdone - sorry if you had or are having one - no offense meant. Too many things to go wrong - wind, rain, hurricanes this week, heat, sand, & beach wanderers coming by to gawk & etc.
Weddings should not be remebered as "fun" but a holy union of two people. Now receptions should be fun & rocking whether traditional or theme.

beach weddings for sure they are great, also try:
classic style (1940's classic hollywood era type)
I know someone getting married and they are doing a 40's theme complete with fake tommy guns for the guys and complete outfits for both guys and girls.
Take an interest of yours and make it into a theme. Those are the best ones b/c it's something you really like.

Make it different more memorable for you and others.
Richard the Lion's Heart Era, with the white horse and some armor thing. King-Queen, round table knights(groom's men), etc.
and, maybe hold it at a Hotel-Castle in England.
Civil War theme. With ranks. On location
Check back into history

um...ive seen a lot of really nice time period weddings..say your really into the 50's or the 20's or a fun era to build occasion around. I've also seen some really interesting weddings that incorporate other cultures..if its asian you bridesmades can carry paper umbrellas, or indian you can all henna yourselves...just be creative. theres so many weddings you can have fun and people wont be as shocked as you'd expect. My mom just re-married and they used her new husbands favorite 80's rock songs as they walked down the aisle.

Laua,
Serve drinks with umbrellas in them, roast a pig, tropical fruits, make sure all foods can be eaten without utensels and have the meal on grass mats.... See any Visit Hawaii commercial for decor ideas.. Remember to get a permit for a large bonfire..
_________________________
Pirates of the Carribean,
Drinks with swords tropical fruit and finger sandwiches as food.. Guests should be able to easily eat while mingling about.. When it comes time for you and your groom to leave he can throw you over his shoulder like a pirate and run off with you.. Yet again permit for large bonfire..
______________________________
60"s teen beach movie theme: Seen anything Annette Funichello and Franky Avalon made as reference..
Beach umbrella, sand pails and shovels and beach balls as decor, a bar can be set up in a beach tent cabana, serve deli meats, cheeses and breads buffet style...

beach is great fun, kissing kids (sweethearts), chocolate kisses (works best if your colors are chocolate and pink), Country western, fairytale (or happily ever after), the perfect pair (or perfect pear). www.customweddingsolutions has lots of cute favors. Maybe you can get some ideas by looking at sme of the products.

A lot of very good suggestions, I like the butterflies, birds, angels, black and white, 50's/60's, Fall themes using a lot of browns, yellow and orange, also the winter wonderland with red and white, valtentine with red, white and pink. You name it, you can do it.
Whatever you go with, have fun and enjoy your wedding.
