How do you know that? I know the answer will be: It says so in the Bible or you read it in the Bible.
Well you don't really know that because you don't really know who wrote the books of the Bible and even if they were sane, real people. You never knew them so how can you say that "You Know" God was always there or infinite or what ever?
And this time I'm not even going to put the statement about the "faith" thing, you all just go ahead and say it if you want but I am really looking for you to answer this question with some thinking on your part. Common sense says you don't know really but you want to just Believe it? Is this right or wrong?

And just so everyone will know I was referring to the fact that when someone else asks that question the answer is always referenced with the Bible says so. If you really don't have the "proof" then an honest answer is what I was looking for, and you gave that answer along with Sara so far. Thank you again.

Whatever you believe in, the question of the very beginning will always be a hard one. If you believe in 'the big bang' and evolution, there is still no answer on what was before 'the big bang', and the chances are equal that a scientist knows that 'tbb' ever happened as for a Christian to know that God was there always.
Anyway, how can God 'be there'? I don't think there's a place where God lives - this whole story is a consequence of that 'old man with a beard' syndrome.
If you believe that matter can be formed out of energy, and that energy is eternal, then, if you accept God as some kind of intelligent energy you have a didactic proof that God is eternal - as in: no beginning or end, just is.
And, even if this is so, a human mind can't think 'eternal', so you would still have to ask where did energy originate from, thus, where did God originate from.
In our conception of time, as a straight line, there's a start and an end to everything. If there is something that doesn't start or end, we can't even imagine it, right?
If you look like that, then, really, the only way to believe in anything is just pure faith, isn't it?

If you do not accept the Bible as proof that God is uncreated, which is the only text that is appropo to studying God, then I am content in not using the Bible. If you do not desire to have faith, then I am content not to answer with faith.
I will use something outside of Scripture and faith. We say God is uncreated because of the following.
[1] God is uncreated because He is the first mover (intiator and creator of all things). Anything moved is moved by another. There cannot be an infinite series of movers. So, there must be a first mover. That first mover we call God.
[2] God is uncreated because He is the first cause. Anything caused is caused by another. There cannot be an infinite series of causes. So there must be a first cause. We call that first cause God.
[3] God is uncreated because He is a Necessary Being. Not everything is contingent (dependent). So there is a necessary Being upon which other beings depend for their existence.
[4] God is uncreated because He is the Greatest Being. Whatever is great to any degree gets its greatness from that which is the greatest. So there is a greatest Being, which is the source of all greatness. We call that greatest source God.
[5] God is uncreated because He is an intelligent designer. Whatever acts for an end must be directed by an intelligent being. So the world must have an intelligent designer. That intelligent designer we call God.
In all of these instances what we call God is the first or supreme among them and not a thing within a series or it would not be God.
Think on these things well. If you can refute them, by all means do so. Yet, I kindly advise you to read the whole of these five points which are found in St. Thomas Aquina's five proofs of God's existence.
May the Lord bless and keep you. May He let the light of His face shine upon you.
God's and your beast of burden

Excellent question and points raised. Often religious people will tell you to look all around and all that stuff must have come from somewhere, so they decide that’s God. But when you ask, where did God come from, you get the crazy answer he always was, or go read the Bible.
God is just another fake creation by man.
Humanity has created many Gods, for example – Gods of Olympus, Ancient Egypt, Babylon and so on. Most of us are atheists about most Gods humanity has created, except the latest craze, the current God in the Bible. Learned atheists have also rejected this version of a God, but some hard-core believers still hang on, presumably until a better image of God is created by man.
Faith in God seems to be nothing more than humans attempting to run away from reality, an excuse to avoid thinking and evaluating evidence. Faith is just an emotional escape and really just a substitute for opening your eyes to reason.
Believers talk about God creating man in his own image. It’s in the Bible so it’s fact – get a grip, get real. The facts suggest the exact opposite. Man created God in his own image. I’m sure humanity will disregard this God, as they have disregarded all previous Gods, it’s just a matter of time before humanity creates another God that better serves their emotions and image.

Dear melrae,
The reason Christians quote the Bible is because, we can only know about God as He reveals himself to us and one of the main ways God has chosen to do that is through the Bible.
That is what the Bible says. All other answers will be speclation just as different theories that anyone else might have about "where God came from."
The Bible has been proven to be historically accurate. And although written by 40 different authors, all tell the same story and not to mention fulfilled prophecies.
I think also one thing we have to understand about God is that he isn't bound by human laws and understanding. In our minds we can't conceive how God can have already existed. But God also says his ways are greater than our ways- that some of his ways are beyond our understanding. I don't understand how God has always been- but i do understand that the Bible is God's word and that is what He has to say about Himself- and i hold that in higher regard than any idea that man has about how God came to be.
Sincerely and thoughtfully,
Nickster

According to xtian dogma, God is eternal, ergo He is/was/will be always there. Other monotheistic faiths believe the same thing (Islam and Judaism, for example).
For those of us who don't believe in God, the question is moot. If there is no deity, there is no need to wonder how it's always been there. We might as well wonder if the Invisible Pink Unicorn is eternal.
The way you've asked your question picks a fight, which will not result in many good responses to your question. You obviously are questioning your faith (or have already questioned it and found xtianity to be wanting). I think the best think now is to move on to what a secular world view means to you, rather than focus on why others don't subscribe to the same ideology.

I am not a theist, but this question about Gods' cause is just as misguided as the "can god make a rock he can't lift, jump over, etc?" They apply time and space bound logic to something supposed to be outside of time and space.
Let's look at your original question. "Who made God?" directly impies cause and effect. Cause and effect imply before and after - time. So does the anwer "he was always there". If God exists outside of time and space, these time references are inappropriate.
The lifting, jumping over, etc., questions have the same problem, but with referrence to space. These are what philosophers call "category mistakes"; applying language suitable for one category to another.
Your current question is about faith. Faith is necessary to live. I have faith that the drivers travelling the other way on a 2 laned street will not swerve and hit me, or I could not drive. But that kind of faith is based on rational criteria (mutual safety). The problem with the religions following Abraham is they require faith with no rational criteria. Often that "faith" is based on fear and/or ignorance. It is chosen to ease ones discomfort with the world. I come here to drive out that fear and ignorance for all of our mutual safety.

So your question is who made God. Right? That was before you rambled on about the authorship of the Bible. I guess I'll answer the main question and if you want to know about the Bible we can talk about that later.
Do you have trouble with the scientific concept that matter is eternal?
I'll bet it's as easy for you to believe as the idea of the sun rising tomorrow morning. If matter is eternal who made it? Can't you see how silly the question sounds? So God being an eternal being is like the scientific concept of matter, He always is....Jim

I can't believe that someone else besides me doubts the way and by who the bible was written!! It's great!
As for the question.... you've got to realize that many Christians believe that Mary had a baby without having intercourse too....
I wonder if I could write a book, say it was God's word, and see how many people would base their life and beliefs on it!

Who Created Evil?
The university professor challenged his students with this question: Did God create everything that exists?" A student bravely replied "Yes, he did!" God created everything? the professor asked. "Yes sir," the student replied.
The professor answered, "If God created everything, then God created evil since evil exists, and according to the principal that our works define who we are, then God is evil."
The professor was quite pleased with himself and boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth.
Another student raised his hand and said, "Can I ask you a question professor?" Of course”, replied the professor. The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?" The
professor replied "Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?" The students snickered at the young man's question.
The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist. According to the laws of physics, what we consider as cold is in reality the absence of heat. Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body, or matter, have or transmit energy. Absolute zero ( 460 degrees F) is the total absence of heat. Cold does not
exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat.
The student continued. "Professor, does darkness exist?" The professor responded, “Of course it does”. The student replied, “Once again you are wrong, sir. Darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. Light we can study, but not darkness. In fact, In fact we can use Newton's prism to break white light into many colors, and study the various wavelengths or each color. You cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn”t this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present.
Finally the young man asked the professor. "Sir, does evil exist?" Now uncertain the professor responded, “Of course, as I have already said. We see it every day. It is the daily example of man’s inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil”. To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God’s love present in his heart. It's like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light.” The professor sat down.
The young man's name was reported to be Albert Einstein.
