FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) is a social (cultural), not a religious, practice. It originated in Africa and remains today a mainly African cultural practice. Its practitioners are found in many religions (Muslim, Christian, Animism). FGM varies in terms of how much of the clitoris is cut off. It has been associated with Islam because Islam’s Hadith (not its Koran) talks about it and, of course, there are Islam-dominated countries where this practice exists. In Islam, it’s not obligatory and it specifies only partial cutting of the clitoris; furthermore, many Muslim countries don’t have this practice at all (again, emphasizing the social/cultural rather than the religious origin). In cultures that do promote it, it’s done for various reasons: make a woman ‘clean’ or to remove her sexual desire (subjugation of women) or is considered a rite of passage for a woman (establishing sexual identity). It’s practiced very openly in Africa (28 countries) and less openly in the Middle East in countries like Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan and Syria. There are horror stories that show just how much this practice is incorporated into the subjugation of women.

Tribal people do this. and they don't cut the clitoris off... they cut the hood off of the clitoris so that it is Painful to have sex. That way, the little wife won't cheat on the old man (who's cheating on her with other women who have not had this done)... considering the high rate of Aids in Africa, this is the only conclusion I can come to concerning that.

they do it in khartoum sudan. female circumcision. the region is under islamist rule (since 1989) but this was going on before that. i'm not sure it's tied to the religion but they don't stop it.

i know i heard about it, its in some part of africa, its not something related to religion i guess, its more connected to culture. i heard about a girl who left her family (in africa, her mother helped her to run away from home) and later on she turned to be a model in USA.
