It all depends on how much support they have underneath the mattress. Some wooden frames are strong, solid, sturdy frames that lock perfectly into a headboard and footboard, have many wooden slats that have adjustable legs for support in the center. Some frames may appear to be wood, but are mostly pressed wood (particle board) and would not be as strong as solid wood. And, some wooden frames do not have any center slats for support, making your mattress bow in the center and possibly ruin your boxspring.
Metal Frames are commonly used with Iron headboards and footboards. And, as with the wooden frames, need center support for your mattress and boxspring, like a fifth leg in the very center. You can also request a "heavy duty metal frame", made with thicker metal, and adequate center support. If you were planning to attatch an iron headboard and footboard to a metal bed frame, however, it is often difficult to securely attatch them to the metal frames for stability because you have to bolt the headboard and footboard to the frame. With a wooden frame, you would Usually hook the rails onto the headboard and footboard, and press down to secure. A well made solid wood bed with rails that hook to a headboard and footboard, however, is in my opinion the best type of bed to buy

Frame supports the mattress. Generally a metal frame come standard with a mattress and box springs purchase or for a $40 up charge.
If by wood versus metal you really mean headboard then that is your personal preference. We bought a head board and foot board 4-poster that forced us to ditch our existing metal frame because the unit we bought included a built in frame.

What is the style of the rest of your furniture in the room? Think the bed frame should match.
Personally, I like black metal framed beds.

For the furniture I would say wood is my preference. Most frames are metal. Unless you are buying a wood bedroom furniture set, like the amish kind are all wood.

Metal tends to be more modern, and wood more tradtional. It depends on the style of your room. Also, metal is just kind of trendy. It may not stay in style for a long time like wood.

if there is enough wood at the bottom of the legs you can (if you need to preserve intergrity of antique) use some form or screw clamp & sandwhich the headboard itself where you would be clamping it with a piece of 3/4 stock or if you are okay with drilling hoes in the antique to bolt it to the new frame using lag bolts with washes and nuts. Difficult to answer without seeing or knowing the particular construction of the head board.
