i have a 14 week old german shepherd bith , i have had her for 2 weeks now i got her when she was 12 weeks old.she is a brilliant puppy , loves playing and chewing my arm, she has not had 1 accident in the house at all , she goes all night with no problems and runs in to the garden in the morning, i could not ask for a better pup, however she has not barked or made a noise apart from the odd gruff when she is sniffing around in the garden, is there a certain age that they bark or could there be a problem.

Hi.

Congrats on your new puppy and I hope she brings a lot of joy to your life.

Re to the barking I have 3 white German Shepherds 2 of which I had from 7 wks and the other from 11 wks.

Now they are 13 wks 17 wks and 20 wks.

The youngest started barking at 12 wks the next one started barking at 14 wks and the last one has been barking since I got her at 11 wks so I don't think you have anything to worry about as your pup will bark when she is ready.

So long as you have heard some kind of noise from her then she should be fine.

If my dogs are in the back garden where it is totally fenced in and they can't even see out of the gate then they don't tend to bark unless they hear another dog bark or they are play barking.

But if they are out the front garden which is also totally fenced in but they can see out of the gate they will bark if someone goes past that they don't know or if someone comes to the gate to either stroke them or to come in the gate.

I think all dogs are just about the same as humans some bark a lot and some don't as with humans some of them are quite and others you just cant shut up.

As you have only had her for 2 weeks you should give her a little time as a puppy doesn't go into a new home and automatically think Mm-mm this is my new home I must bark and protect it.

All these things come in time but your puppy has to really get to know you and your family first as it is quite traumatic for them going to a new home and she has got to learn to love trust and respect you first so if I was you I would concentrate on the training side of things as German Shepherds do love to be trained and then you will find that the bark will come when she is ready but then you will need to train her not to bark at anything and everything or you will end up getting complaints from your neighbours.

My pups also even at 7 wks went out into the garden to pee and still wake me in the night if they want to go out, so like I said they are eager learners and easy to train so have a lot of fun with her but make sure she knows who is the top dog in your house so that she doesn't try to rule you as she gets older.

Good luck and best wishes.

My siberian huskie puppy doesn't bark either. There is nothing wrong with it and if you dont want a guard dog BE HAPPY! It can relate to the disposition to the dog, and often the upbringing of the puppies. A lot of the time if dogs come from a very relaxed litter with well behaved parents they will pick up on it and learn barking is not necessary. If they aren't exposed to circmstances where they feel barking is necessary (say around other loud dogs) they may never start...However just because your dog doesn't bark now doesn't mean he wont start later, and I'm not saying to avoid barking dogs because socialization is extremely important at this stage.

Maybe she's just too young, doesn't sound to be very old.. Don't dogs begin with barking some around at the age of 6 months?

My mom has a German Shepard who is about 1 year old and she hardly ever barks, not even when someone comes to the door. I don't think it's a problem, that's just how some are.

Do you really want a dog that barks all the time? I think you should just give her time and Thank the Lord that your dog is soo perfect. You are probably worried about whether she will bark when she needs to protect you. Well don't worry . . . if its absolutely necessary, she will know and she will bark to warn. My dog was the same way and I adopted her.

Dogs usually bark and yelp from the day they're born, but some are a bit weird, like James Herriot's story about the dog with only one woof.
It sounds like yours is smart, stimulated, and secure. Probably just a quiet dog. I suppose she could be deaf, but if she can hear your voice, she's probably just easy-going about her territory and secure in her relationship with you.
Just don't brag too much about your well mannered dog; you'll make the pomeranian owners jealous.
P.S., don't let her chew on you, because she'll keep doing it when she gets big.

Puppies don't usually bark until they get to about five to six months. Then she may bark quite a bit. Depends on what sort of stuff she does. If you keep her life occupied, e.g doing agility, this would keep your dog very happy and also healthy.

Glad to hear you have got yourself such a wonderful pup! She sounds lovely!

Consider yourself lucky that your dog is not a barker. Neighbors hate to hear a barking dog because it is very anoying. My dog doesn't bark and I love it. You dog may find her voice someday but as a neighbor next a yapping yard sh#$$er that barks all day due to separation anxiety I hope it doesn't. You'd never know I have a dog. I got lucky with mine.

your puppy is absolutely normal. Some pups just take longer.

Be careful what you wish for though. If you encourage barking you'll be back next week trying to figure out how to make her stop.

If she needed to bark, She would. Be glad she doesn't need to.

Counselor is correct. I had a puppy that did the same thing. I was kind of worried too. The day when she finally barked, I felt like a mom who whose child had taken their first step.....lol.
