i have taken 8 lessons now, and i have managed to:
drive the car,
go up to 3rd gear,
reversing into a road once,
3 point turn in road 3 times
turning right into roads
Driving in a main road

And thats about it - is my instructor taking the piss...i think i've picked up most things very well, but she makes me repeat the same thing over and over and over again....is this slow or fast?

Sounds really slow progress to me. Should have done all that in 3 lessons (30 mins each). After 8 sessions you should have covered parallel parking, starting on a hill (if learning on a standard transmission), 2-point turns, driving on a highway, used all the gears, and much more. On the other hand, the instructor may feel that you need more practice on what you have covered. Good driving requires lots of practice. Good Luck.

No offence, but it depends on how good or bad a driver you are. You need to learn road positioning, use of mirrors, clutch control, awareness of other road users, awareness of speed, and many other things which she might be focusing on without you realising it. But saying that, if you aren't happy, try a lesson or two with someone else. You might get on better with someone with a different style. Good luck anyway, take things at your own pace. Some people take about 5 lessons, some take about 105. Be patient, but don't be taken advantage of.

How many lessons do you think you need to drive? The DSA recommend a minimum of 40 lessons plus private practice between lessons. No your driving instructor is definitely not taking the piss. How many lessons, how long is a piece of string?

However, if you have lost confidence in your instructor you are free to change to another.

I really don't understand your question, but I think you are asking if you are ready to take your driving test. She is probably doing that, because you don't have enough experience to take it yet. She wants to make sure that you pass the drivers test, the first time you try for it. You didn't mention, if you have tried to parallel park, yet. That is something you have to do, when you take your test. She thinks you need more practice..good luck..
edit: I just read some of the other answers, and most seem very good, however, I don't know what "is my instructer taking the piss" means. If someone could leave a post, to let me know..Thanks.

By my 8th lesson I had already been on the motorway a couple of times, but I guess the instructor tailors to the individual and also practices vary from country to country (I'm in New Zealand) and you do have to repeat things a lot of times to learn.

How about you change instructor, that will tell you if it is just her.

Yes he's going at a very slow teaching pace, (1 reverse?) better look for another instructor who will inspire u to drive well and learn faster.

no left turns? You just go in circles. you should be using 4th gear by now, maybe try another instructor, ask her what level she passed, I think level 7 is highest, most good ones are level 6 at least, personnally, I feel male instructors are better, I had one of each.,

you'll find that the average amount of lessons is 10 / 15 before thinking about a test.
You have to be able to do things without prompting.
