The reason its not legal is because if first cousins mate usually their kids are born with disabilities.

In any kind of article that you read, it will tell you that marrying your first cousin is incest. If you would move a little further down the line it would be okay but that is awfully close in blood relation. Try looking it up on the internet, I think you will be surprised about what you find.

Why would you want to marry your first cousin? Don't you know that that is incest. Any person that is normal wouldn't even consider that. I don't understand why anyone wants to. There are billions of people in the world and you can't find someone that you are not related too. Geez what has this world come too that people want to marry their own family.

Okay I'm tired of hearing, "Cousins give birth to babies with birth defects" No that's not completely true. Yes it raises the rate of birth defects, but it's only by 3% or lower. As for it being illegal it most likely is because our government feels the need to control other peoples lives. I would be concerned though how this would effect your family. If you don't be live it is incest that doesn't mean everyone else will share that view... I also don't believe most of these cousin questions, sorry no offense.

Well, technically, incest is between a brother and a sister.
So, you are right, I do not catagorize this as incest.
but, if you love her and she loves you and your family is against this and you are of age, I suggest you take your fiancee and move and start your life as a couple. Of course, see which state it is legal in to be married in and then stay there (not unless the state you are in is allowing it, then marry there and then leave.) I wish you the best of luck.

What these ppl fail to realize is that sort of thing has been going on FOREVER. Do you know how many kings have been married to someone within their family. And not just kings but throughout all of history.
I have always been a firm believer that you can never change who you fall in love with.
whether this question is a joke or not......all I can say is sure here in AMERICA it may be socially unacceptable.......marriage is just a piece of paper.........if you too are commited to each other and can stay together forever, it'll be more than what most ppl get in a relationship.

Marrying your first cousin increases the likelihood of any genetic problems in your family occurring in your children. You wouldn't have an entire/separate gene pool to dilute down the chances of it's occurrence.
I think that is the reasoning for it not being legal for first cousins to marry.

I dont think it should be legal to marry anybody in your family. There over 5 billion people on this planet, i am sure you could find another person to marry besides your cousin.
