Well, all those answers are correct but here is some thing 'natural' thing that does work: L-Lysine is an amino acid it is cheap and easily found at any place that sales vitamin stuff from Walmart to your local health food store.
When stress causes the l-arginine in your body to overtake the l-lysine and you have herpes(as does EVERY one that has had chickenpox) the result may be cold sores or shingles or several other uncomfortable things on a sliding scale of unpleasantness. Stress may be in any form from a sunburn, a test in school, a period, a fight with a loved one you pick--herpes the gift that keeps on giving.
BTW: any cold sore remedy that has a drug that ends in "caine" like benzocaine should help with that pain and remember the sooner you start dealing with it the sooner it will be gone BUT you are contagious from a few days before you feel that first tingle until after the last scab is gone...

Cold sores are the herpes virus(type 1 I believe.) You will get recurrences for your whole life, but the longer you have it the less often the outbreaks, usually. If you can get your hands on it, Valtrex, the herpes medication, can shorten the length of these outbreaks. But it is expensive and not available without prescription. It also seems that a healthy diet helps to prevent and limit further outbreaks. I take a lot of vitamins and get a good amount of rest each day and the cold sores are generally mild and very rare these days. Other than that nothing else works with certainty

It doesn't sound good but now they make a stick form. Carmex or anything with those ingredients in it!

Are you sure they are just cold sores? Contact your doctor, they could be something more. You may need a pill instead of just topical treatment.

Try valtrex - it's a prescription oral medication. There's also zovarax, it's a topical.
