I would think that a non lethal blow to the extremities would be a good choice. Go for the hand or foot.
The healing time will be plenty long and painful enough to give them time to think of a way for revenge.
Good luck with that!

First off, let's be realistic here. To paraphrase Harrison Ford from Raiders of The Lost Ark...you don't bring a knife to a gunfight. This is the voice of experience--you'll get ti taken away from you and you'll end up with open-heart surgery or cradling your guts in your hands.
Shooting having been established, as someone who's been there, let me stress four things:
1: Never let an assailant get closer than three meters (10 feet) or they'll take your gun, and kill you.
2: Never draw a gun unless you intend to kill someone. You always shoot to kill. Self-defence is sacrosanct...even animals have the right to defend themselves.
3: If you're idealistic enough to ignore the above caution, aim for the crotch if it's a pistol, and the knees if it's a shotgun you're using.
4: If you haven't ignored number two, good for you! You might make it after all, so let me stress that you should never aim for the shoulders (too easy to miss entirely) or the head (the hardest shot to make), but for the chest, just to the left (your right) of the sternum, between the fourth and fifth ribs, firing at least twice. (think 1cm or about 3/8" below the nipple, but again, just to the left of the sternum.)
Also, "wonder-nines" are overrated. If it's legal where you live, buy .45ACP.

A doctor friend of mine six years ago was taken to civil court and paid out the nose to a punk, who, with a weapon, broke into his house and was stealing him blind.
The doctor came down stairs with his shotgun, with bird shot in it, and as the guy came back in thru the window, he shot him in the leg. The guy dropped the gun and the cops arrested him.
The lawsuit was for loss of wages, loss of affection and pain and suffering. It didn't matter the guy was armed and had about 4 grand worth of stuff outside to haul away.
Shot to stop them cause if you wound them, they can still get to you.
