it's just like any other physical trauma you may have ever experienced. may hurt like hell going thru it, but eventually you forget about it. really, it's no big deal. i started tearing during labor so they went ahead and cut me completely from hole to hole. i didn't feel a thing thanks to the epidural; however, the week and a half after labor was kinda ruff. you'll be just fine. modern science has come so far that you can handle it. just remember those who in the past had to rip and tear with no epidural and no good drugs. OUCH!!!

With my daughter I didnt have a drugs or a episotomy.. my whole labor happened too fast.. by the time I got into the hospital I had her ten minutes later. She was 9lbs2ozs aka HUGE! And oh my goodness that tear hurt. I couldnt sit or pee for what felt like forever. With my second child I got a epidural and got to ease into the whole labor process; he was starting to come out and the dr asked if I wanted to be cut: he said it would make me have the baby faster. He told me it was a little cut; not a full episiotomy so I agreed. And my son was born smoothly and I had not even half the pain afterwards with him. I used this pain relieveing foam on my pads that the nurse gave me and it really helped. I felt better months sooner than with my first child.

Have to say, it was the last thing on my mind. In a room full of doctors - while I felt like I was pooping this baby out...nope sorry.
But, I did tear 2 places outside and 2 places inside. It was pretty bad, but my doc took care of me and gave me all sorts of pain meds. Really, I had too much to do and think about than pain. I used Tucks and stuck them on my pads. I had a tub of Tucks in every bathroom. They also give you a lotion to use that really helps. And, don't refuse the peri bottle! IT IS A LIFESAVER!!
By the way, my son was huge! He was 9lbs 8 oz and 21 1/2 inches. His head was 13 1/2 inches. Yup, he was a bruiser!

Never had an episiotomy.
I did have a 2nd degree tear with my first. It healed pretty well. I wore pads soaked in witch hazel and then frozen in my underwear for a while and I used the peri bottle they gave me at the hospital to keep the stitches clean.
No tearing or any perineal damage of any kind with baby #2 or baby #3.

No episiotomy. I did vaginal stretching before my first child and only got 3 stitches. No stitches with 2nd or 3rd.

I had an episiotomy & tore with my 1st. She came out with her head sideways and it burned while it was happening but I had her natural and didn't care as I just wanted her out!!!!! Afterwards it used hurricane gel & soaked in cool water...
21 yrs later I had neither with my son and he was 2.5lbs bigger than his sister...But I did have an epidoral...
Start doing some quats and talk to your OB/GYN about what your options are...
Good luck...

I tore but not very much. I've heard of people having a really hard time with it...but I actually didn't have a problem. Personally, my vagina was the last thing on my mind...so many other things were going on in my life.

my best friend had one and she said it gave her the most relief ever! just hearing her tell the story makes me laugh when she's like, "so, they cut me and i was like 'AAAAHHHHH' RELIEF!"
she's funny.
besides, you don't really get to choose if you have one or not. if you are tearing, then they will cut you to make a better opening, and if the baby needs more room they may cut you anyway.
most people i've talked to said it was the LAST thing on their minds.
