In simple terms cancer is deformity of cells within the body. It is vERY common for types of cancer to be hereditary. THe best thing for you to do is to get screened often. All adults should get a Physical Exam performed at least once a year. If something is found early, treatment is the best way to fight cancer. Good luck to you.

Cancer in general is genetic but not necessarily hereditary. What this means is that cancers develop because the genetic coding in these cells are faulty, and they proliferate quickly and indefinitely rather than die off as normal cells do. These genetic coding errors often times develop in our body as we age or from some external stimuli, and they often occur in somatic cells, or cells that are not part of the reproductive system. Therefore these cannot be passed from parents to children and are not hereditary.

Having said this, there are certain forms of cancer that can be hereditary, and that would be suggested by a fairly distinct family history of cancers. For example, certain forms of pancreatic cancers are associated with a pattern of cancers in which other family members develop adrenal cancers or thyroid cancers, and this syndrome is known as Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia.

In your case, if your grandfather was the only one with cancer, and no other family members are involved, then the likelihood that it is hereditary is probably low.

They found my Pancreatic cancer in December. No history of it in my family. They say my children will most likely not get it but I could have them take a gene blood test for any cancers. I left it up to them since they are in their 20's. Do not let negative answers scare you. Work with your doctor and get CT screens. I am still here after chemo and plan to be for a long long time and so do my doctors. Even with 60% of my pancreas gone and my spleen gone.

it is my understanding that it is

however you may or may not carry the dominant trait

If you have a general bone frame, height, etc. like your grandpa then your pancreas may have the same traits too and the probably is there. If you favor other members like your grandma or the other side of the family, the likelihood is somewhat less.

The fact that you are one generation away from the cancer decreases your liklihood, but you are not sure if your parents have yet to develop it.

Making dietary changes is your first line of defense in treating hypothyroidism. Learn here https://tr.im/JWqnt

Many people with hypothyroidism experience crippling fatigue and brain fog, which prompts reaching for non-nutritional forms of energy like sugar and caffeine. I’ve dubbed these rascals the terrible twosome, as they can burn out your thyroid (and destabilize blood sugar).

1. Just say no to the dietary bungee cord. Greatly reduce or eliminate caffeine and sugar, including refined carbohydrates like flour, which the body treats like sugar. Make grain-based carbohydrates lesser of a focus, eating non-starchy vegetables to your heart’s content.

2. Up the protein. Protein transports thyroid hormone to all your tissues and enjoying it at each meal can help normalize thyroid function. Proteins include nuts and nut butters; quinoa; hormone- and antibiotic-free animal products (organic, grass-fed meats, eggs, and sustainably-farmed fish); and legumes.

No, not really. Cancer can run in families, but that does not mean you will get it.
