hey, for the past while i have been asking questions about my 8 month old puppy, buddy. These Q's pertained to his bad habits & oral health. i just want to tell everyone what ended up happening & how things are going. Friday i took buddy to the vet about his teeth & to my surprise he said Buddys teeth were healthy. skeptical i asked why. well, he found that buddys red & blackish teeth were caused by some sort of antibotic that a prievious owner could have gave him (remember, i rescued him from the pound around 3 months old). Thankfully buddy didnt have to loose any teeth, and the whole appointment costed me only 40 bucks. the only "bad" news is that buddy's fangs most likely are going to stay the black red forever; and the wobbily fang? the doc said that there was a very slight chance it would fall out, but most likely it is just weak & will stiffen up soon. btw, he said pig ears are not very good for dogs (lol, & i barely bought a 10 pack).

As for buddy's bad puppy habits, they have slowly been decreasing & he has been more calm. the vet said that most likely buddy just grew up. I also was told that he was part fox hound which really explains the cuteness! the doc said they are extremely stubborn & take FOREVER to train (especially potty). Thankfull however i learned that buddy liked to pee in the rocks next to my car & poo in the divider of my neighbors grass yard (dont worry, i baggy). this has been a huge time saver & when he goes i give him a treat for each thing. he hasnt had any accidents for 2 weeks & holds it more often. its also easier to read his signs (ears perked up, whine, sniffing ground, stops whatever hes doing and gives me wide eyed stare, jumps up & whines, runs upstairs towards door fast, etc) i even have been letting him stay outside his crate at night ALONE & i can trust him not to potty until i wake him up (if i or my hubby have to go at night, we take him too) we also take him pee whenever we need 2

As for his trash habits, im sorry to say this, but my brother in-law caught him eating a burrito that he left out & hit him really hard. like harder than anyone should spank a dog; bitter sweetly though, buddy hasnt touched trash since. he will see it, sometimes sniff a little, then ignore it completely. just to test him i left a taco out on purpose, took a 3 hour nap, and woke up to find buddy just sleeping in his bed that is placed right next to the coffe table where the taco lay untouched. he doesnt look like he is sad, just like "okay, i know if i take the food i will get spanked". i also found that after giving him a doggie treat followed by a toy, he will just play with his toy instead of watching me eat and beg and whine the entire time for scraps. its like he knows now that he cant eat unless i give it to him. i feel bad that my bro in law did that, but i have to admit it worked and i dont think my dog is as stupid anymore. with tricks, he still is clueless except for roll over

but now he comes more when i call him or start walking away. i have been trying to incorporate body language a lot more and he seems to get the picture. like if he goes in a room we dont want him in i point my finger, say no, and walk towards him, backing him out of the room. i then tell him to stay...but i dont think he gets that word quite right. at least he understands all the praise afterwards. so, thats all that i can think of. thank you all for your answers and concern. you can write whatever you want to answer this Q: this is a free one on me.

Don't feel TOO guilty about the spanking. Dog's don't hold grudges, plus you weren't the one that did it. If he had been hurt you would have every right to be mad, though. Explain to your BIL that you don't want your dog treated that way and why.

In the meantime, focus on the positives. IF my dog had ignored a taco on a table for three hours I would let him eat every bit of that taco (fed in his dish) as a reward. OK maybe not, since it could have spoiled, but maybe after 30 minutes!

Thank you for making the choice to rescue an unwanted pet. You clearly have been rewarded with a very fine dog.
