You can get it.
Genetic susceptibility is one way of getting it.The causes are presently presumed to be:
Genetic susceptibility to the illness.
A trigger, which could be one of:
An environmental agent, probably a virus or other infection
Stress,
Pregnancy or
Possible exposure to gluten as a young baby before the gut barrier has developed fully. This association is currently under investigation.
Coeliac disease is associated with other autoimmune diseases; these diseases are also probably a combination of susceptibility and infection.

Chromosomes come in two halves, held together by a chromatid. The chromosomes carry the genes that code for all the functions your body does in order to survive. There is one gene for each function on each half of the chromosome responsible for carrying that gene.

If both are functioning correctly, you will not have the disease. Usually if one is faulty and the other is not you will be fine BUT your children may have the disease if you have children with someone in the same position. (there are a few diseases where if one is faulty and the other is not you will have the disease. The gene that overrides the other is the dominant gene. The overridden gene is recessive)

Coeliacs Disease is recessive. This means the gene that means you can processes gluten masks the faulty gene that means you are unable to do so. If you possess the functioning gene you will have no problem with gluten, whether or not you have the faulty gene. In order to have Coeliacs disease, both gluten processing genes must be faulty.

In order to have Coeliacs disease your father must either have or carry the faulty genes. If he has it, you WILL have it. If he doesn't, you have a 1/2 chance of having it if he carries it and a zero chance if he does not carry the faulty gene.

I would suggest you would mostly likely be showing the signs if you had it (However, I only know the genetics of Coeliacs, not the clinical signs)

Not always, but there is a possibility. If your mum have coeliac disease your close relatives are ten times more likely to have coeliac disease as well. What Can You Do to see if you have any simptoms already:
Step 1. Find out if you are sensitive to gluten.
You can try home test with Biocard Celiac Tes. If you get a positive result with the Biocard Celiac Test it is essential that you continue with a normal diet until you have the diagnosis confirmed by an intestinal biopsy

Step 2. If you are, then you will need to discus this with your doctor or dietician who will help you with a gluten free diet.
Once you know that coeliac disease is contributing to your wheat intolerance symptoms then the disease can be controlled with a gluten free diet.

Hi,

Unfortunately, if your mother suffers from coeliac disease it does mean that the risk of you having the disease IS increased but does not mean that you will get it. Other factors which contribute to coeliac disease are:

age - the older you are, the more risk.
gender - females are at greater risk.
pregnancy
exposure to gluten as a baby
stress

Min's answer is really good!!! Also, national chains in the US have web sites and a lot of them have gluten free menus you can look at online. My favorites are Carrabbas and Outback. I understand PFChangs is pretty good too. But if you don't live in the US then that doesn't help but some of the restaurants might do the same thing there. Or at least call ahead and discuss the menu when your father isn't around. Then she will know what she wants before she gets there. If you could order a salad at Subway or anywhere else you are eating with her, it will be a show of support and sort of help keep temptation out of sight while she is adapting. After a while, she will be able to handle it better. I agree, the breads can be pretty bad, but keep experimenting with different brands until you find one that is ok. Different people like different textures and flavors. My favorite is a flaxseed bread by Glutino. Glutino also has good crackers and what they call a breadstick but is more of a cracker. Good luck and if I can help anymore, contact me through here.

You are predisposed to developing Coeliac Disease at some stage due to genetic linkage. This doesn't mean, however, that you WILL develop it.

See the following websites for a better explanation.

if your mum has it there's certainly a higher probability that you could have it as well - you may not have the same symptoms, so you need to be tested, the sooner the better. Some folks aren't diagnosed until they're older, and by then the damage to their intestines can be quite extensive. The sooner you know, the easier it will be to reverse any damage that's been done.
