-sky (or -skiy, tskiy) is a suffix of a number of Slavic languages, which means adjective made from an appropriate none. E.g. Rus (Russia, old word) - russkiy (Russian); Slovenia - slovenskiy; Riga - rizhskiy, etc. Vasilyev (family name) - vasilyevsky ("of Vasilyev")

It was used to create family names, which originated from location, profession and other things.

Such names spread in USA with immigration from countries with Slavic languages (Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Chechs, Slovakia, Slovenia, ex-Yougoslavia, etc.). Some people of non-Slavic lorigin have such suffixes in their names because of the influence of occupations or migration, e.g. Baltic countries were under tsarist Russia when first passports were introduced with Russians working in offices. A number of Yiddish speakers who fled from nazi regime had such names too, because Jews communities were quite big in the above mentioned countries of the Central and Eastern Europe.

Sky/ski is a popural ending in Russia, Bulgaria, Poland, Serbia, Ukraine, Macedonia, and other Slavic countries.
Also, a person with ov/off-ev/eff (for women -ova/-eva) ending is always from Slavic descent.-Off is simply a misspelled form of
-ov.

This is home to the 7 tribes. There is as many clouds as there are Smiths. Indians once inhabited this land and it was tradition to name there children after nature. Cloud, sky and fox, wolf, little dove and running deer. That was there fathers name and so it became there last name.

Because,, most of them are Polish.....Polanski, for instance...... Its a Polish name... And the Polish were made fun of so much in the "70"s as if they're a "Stupid" nationality!! I think thats sad, because, I have Polish in me...and my great-grandma was a very intelligent woman, and so was her son, my grandpa, who had 5 daughters, and died of a heart-attack, at 47, on his porch, from working three jobs, to support his family!! He was a hard-working man!! To this day I have the Utmost respect, for his dear sweet soul.....He looked just like a young Robert Redford, when he died, too!!! Smile!!!

Slavic lanugages (Polish, Serbian, Czech, Slovak, Russian, and assorted other languages) use forms similar to -ski, -sky, -ov, -owski, -vich, and -ek to mean son of. Examples are "Michalowki" (Polish - son of Michael) and "Romanov" (Russian - son of Roman).
