This is a dilemma. I don't know about the police though. I'm not sure what goes on in your location, but our local men in blue have developed quite a reputation for misplacing evidence, losing statements and forgetting what donut shops they parked the cruisers at, so they are rapidly losing a lot of trust and faith, especially with an item of value, such as this quarter.
You have a lot of integrity. You must know somewhere deep into your soul that this coin probably meant a great deal to the poor individual who has lost it. Hey, who knows what sort of sentimental value it may have for that special person.
I would start by placing an add in your local newspaper under their lost and found listing in the classifieds. Post your phone number and only mention that you have found a coin. When the person who calls can identify the vicinity where they believe the coin parted from their company, can give you the date the coin was minted, and describe any dirt marks, scratches or dents visible on this coin in great detail will obviously be the true owner. Returning this loved and cherished peice of currency to its rightful owner will probably bless you with an undescribable sense of rightiousness that your written description of this event will probably be on the best seller list by the end of the year. And just think of the profits you will make, not only from the written version, but also from the film and movie rights as well.
And if you never do find the rightful owner, well then the next time you're downtown drop the damn thing into the parking meter that is located outside of the newspaper office as you will still have to pay for the classified listing.

I am an honest, educated person too , but for 25 cents?
Your conscience is very sensitive...
Don't sweat it. No one will die after losing 25 cents, nor will write about it in the paper.
Give it to the police if you want, but the amount of money is very small. The police will think 1) You're taking them for fools or 2)You're crazy.
And even if they accept you turning them in (allthough it's quite illogical), some stranger will simply come and clame it.
P.S. For all rational human beigns: You don't go to hell if you find a quarter on the street.

You're stressing over a quarter? A QUARTER?! I just don't understand it. Do you ever look at the ground and see the trillions and billions of pennies, dimes, etc. strewn about the cracks in the sidewalk or near gutters? If you only knew, my friend, you wouldn't be able to digest solid food.

It only 25 cents; it really does not make sense to turn it in to the police. i can see if it was a sack of money, yes, turn it in; but not 25 cents; just keep for yourself.

If it's bothering you that much than you should turn it in right away. You shouldn't lose so much sleep over finding the monetary equivalent of a gum ball. Good luck.

Don't waste police resources in a miserable quarter, what you should have done not to jinx yourself is to have made an 'X' using the quarter...if you feel it doesn't belong to you give it to a homeless so he/she can go buy some alcohol, Thuderbird...lmao!!!

If it was a bigger sum I would say yes, hand it in to the police but since it is just a small amount just stick it in a charity box.

I found 145.00 in a wallet in the front of a parking lot, no identification, except a receipt of some sort.
I went shopping.

for a lousy quarter, a police department would have to do a pile of paperwork, using up $50 or so in labor.
put it in your pocket

Did you find in on the street or did you steal it from the street? Next time you pass a donation cup or what ever drop it in ALONG WITH YOUR DONATION.
