Fornication (sexual pleasure outside of marriage) was generally considered to include masturbation.

Because it's not polite to talk about in any kind of social setting. The bible does talk about lust, though.
Spanking the monkey can release a lot of pent up lust, but too much might be self abuse.
Just how much is right is different for every individual. This assumes you are single. If you are married, it turns into the "sin of Onan" (he spilled his seed on the ground" Also, if you have an emission you are considered unclean by the priesthood, so it is a questionable practice.

The Bible is very specific and focuses on actual sexually immoral sins like adultry, beastiality, incest, homosexuality, fornication, etc etc. The reason why the Bible perhaps doesnt mention masturbation as sexual sin is because it is not a sexual sin. To committ a sexual sin you have the subject (you) and the object of sin (married person, animal, same sex partner, person youre not married to)

The problem with pleasing yourself is that it builds up a fantasy sexual world in your mind and after you get married, is hard to break the cycle. Over time, this fantasy life also weakens your integrity and your ability to say NO to situations of teamptation.

So it sin? No proabably not. Does it lead to sin? Yes definately.

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. -Ephesians 5:3

Sex is talked about a lot in the bible. Solomon was pretty good about writing quite erotic things. Although masturbation is not really a big issue. Either is breathing though so I am pretty sure that body functions seem to get the shaft.

It actually names masterbation as 'uncleanliness' or 'impurity' depending on your Bible traslation. Col 5:3-6 I know from personal experience how adimately against masterbation God really is.
If you listen to people that talk about it, they acutally referr to it as 'sex with yourself'. Basically the same way God views it. Which would classify it under sexual immorality and uncleanliness.
Obviously we know that thru the 'process of...' we think dirty thoughts which God is adimately against. We are called to keep our minds pure of all the evil this world is entangled with.
Matthew 5:8
1 chronicles 28:9
Proverbs 4:23

All verses on keeping our thoughts pure.
Sensuality is also referred to in Ephesians 4:19 and we all know that masterbation is sensual.

The Bible teaches in general and specific terms. Sometimes it has detail that a specific act is sin. Other times it presents it as a general principle which may include many specific sins.
When you study deeper into the Bible and pray often it will help you gain a clearer insite of the specifics God requires of us.
I am pleased to see christians want to know truth about things such as this. Most christians see nothing wrong with it nor do they want to know more to prove its sinful. Keep seeking wisdom and understand and God will always show you the right way.
God bless you.

[Lev 15:16] "When a man has an emission of seed, he shall bathe his whole body in water and be unclean until evening.

That passage may allude to masturbation.

[Gen 38:9] Onan, however, knew that the descendants would not be counted as his; so whenever he had relations with his brother's widow, he wasted his seed on the ground, to avoid contributing offspring for his brother.
[Gen 38:10] What he did greatly offended the LORD, and the LORD took his life too.

Another passage that describes sexual behavior to avoid.
the premise of both readings tends to equate misuse of sex is wrong. Sex is for procreation.

I had a friend years ago that would not masturbate because he said the bible said it was a sin. I don't think I would trust him on this though, as he did not find it wrong to sleep with lots of different women.

Here's a serious answer for you:

The *only* reference remotely close to that is in Genesis 38:8-10 "And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also."

Now, in light of the rest of the OT... if a man was to die without children, it was his brother's duty to allow the widow to bear a child.

Well, Onan wasn't happy about providing a child for his now deceased brother, (and as I understand it) so when he went in the tent... he did his duty to his sister-in-law... but pulled out at the last minute (others tend to interpret that passage to mean that he did his duty outside the tent). But, it was for the act of not fulfilling his God-required duty that caused Onan to feel God's wrath... not masturbation, not coitus interruptus... but rebelling against God's word... for sinning, and breaking God's law.

This lies in the matter of conscience and prayer for wisdom and guidance. What harm might befall you or others for masturbation? Or, what benefit is there (with no harm caused to others)? If it would lead you to fornication or lust, avoid it. If it would keep you away from fornication or lust, go for it.

"All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any." - 1 Cor. 6:12

EDIT : To the person above me... there is no Colossians 5:3-6. Perhaps you mean 3:5-6?

Because masturbation is the act of pleasuring oneself that results in someone spilling his or her seed, which was frowned upon in the Biblical days because semen and ova are OBVIOUSLY needed in the human reproduction process.

There is a scripture reference in the bible. I cannot go and look it up for you just now and it is worded different but yet has meanings to your question. It talks about a man wasting his sperm and it is best he put it in ---------------. Ask a pastor to assist in finding the reference for you.
