No they are not , they are servants of a corrupt government... they are in my mind worse than most of the criminals they chase around. Like the cop in Cali that was accused of child molest, cops are scum in disguise.

Police officers are people just like you and me. Some are good and some are bad. However, heroism is subjective. For example, Vlad Dracula, nicknamed Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler) — who was a ruler of Wallachia (1456-1462), is considered by many to be a hero because even though he was a violent man (now that is an understatement), he also brought about an orderly society, virtually free of crime. He was relatively successful at defending his country from the Ottoman Turks as well. So for many people, he was a hero. For his enemies, he was a scourge worthy only of death. This is an extreme example, but I trust you get my point.
Police officers are in a unique occupation. We, as a society, are asking them to protect us and enforce our laws. Yet, we vilify them as a stereotype of the failures that occur in their ranks. We also tend to show disapproval for them when we are on the receiving end of their enforcing duties.
Yet, the largest majority of police officers are true to the oath they took to protect and serve. So, in general, all police officers are heroes to a minor degree. They do the job you are not capable of doing. They place their lives on the line to enforce the laws. This is the job we have asked them to do. Some of the officers become heroes in a major way. They go beyond what is expected and perform great feats of heroism. Then they return to the mundane duties of their jobs.
To say cops are not heroes until they do something heroic is a moot point. When they pin that target on their chest and step out into the dangerous world of law enforcement, they are already heroes, just like our military soldiers, airmen and sailors. If anyone wants to complain about the police, they should try traveling to a country with a very week police force. They will quickly come to appreciate the greater degree of safety afforded them with police in greater numbers and good training.
Exceptions and complaints will always be pointed out above the daily protection provided. Just think of the alternatives. Yes, they are heroes.

I have served as a cop and I can tell you; issuing a uniform does not make anyone a hero. Like any organization, there are bad seeds among cops. I have arrested dirty cops in my career.
I do know a lot of policeman who are heroes. The profession is one of extremes, I know cops who are heroic, brave, honest, beyond a doubt the Best people I know. I also knew cops that I would not turn my back on

I don't believe that is a fair statement. Are all priest honest. No matter what profession a person is in they are simply humans with training & education. In North Little Rock Arkansas the cops are worse than the crimnals. but whear I live now I have met a couple heroic cops. I believe cops have earned a certain level of respect for being in a dangerous situation daily for little pay. I also believe hero status ia earned throughout there carriers by there accomplishments. People are going to say a lot of things. I agree with you.

I would say that every cop, even this guy, have done something "heroic" during the course of their careers. How many of you have chased criminals, given babies CPR, talked a suicidal man into dropping his weapon and getting him help, not to mention dealing with stinking rotting bodies, blood and gore from shootings accidents and assaults? When was the last time a critic had to go through an open window burglary in progress call with his gun out hoping that he doesnt get shot in the head before he gets inside? Ever chase a man armed with a knife who just stabbed somebody through a patch of woods in the middle of a dark rainy night? Have to shoot an armed robber as he came out of a convience store and pointed a shotgun at you? This is just a small sampling of what I and my co-workers have faced in my suburban dept. Imagine what a large city cop faces. When other people are running for safety, who do you think has to go toward the trouble and deal with it? Do I think of myself as a hero?
I remember Major Dick Winters quote at the end of the "Band of Brothers" series.
"My grandson asked me...Grandpa were you a hero in the war?" " No,"I answered,"but I served in a company of heros."
Thats how I feel.
Individually we are all just people and subject to human faults, but I still believe the profession is a heroic one and in general you will never find so many decent, honorable, patriotic people in one place as you will when you enter a police dept.

Just like in any demographic, there are heros and there are zeros.
Just goes to once again show you that you can't generalize anything. Which is what you're doing by assuming people think all cops are heros.

The majority of police officers are heroes. They put their life on the line every day to keep you and me safe. You can't stereotype all cops because one is a nut case. In every walk of life you have the good and the bad. For the most parts, cops are good.

I believe they do heroic type work. They are human beings not robots. They have stresses and pain. They cry, they hurt, they suffer through financial problems, they have jealousies, they get frustrated, they get mad.. just like everyone else.
Police Officers are not perfect creatures. You have to walk and unsullied life, you have to fight hard to ALWAYS make the perfect choice.
People always want to point out everyone else’s failure. It’s almost as if we get pleasures from other peoples pain and especially if its those who correct us when we are wrong.
Police are not PUPPETS of the government. They truly are the Thin Blue Line that divides peace and ciaos.

All cops are hero's. They are a hero every time they put on a uniform and go out to protect you and I from criminals.
As for the cop who killed his girlfriend. He will do his time and no he is not a hero. He is a murderer.

Police officers are not heroes unless they do something heroic. They are people just like you and me with a job to do. Sometimes, just like us, they breakdown and mess up.
