When Adam and Eve sinned they gave the Lordship of this earth(that was given to them by God) over to the Evil One. God saw at that time that there was only one way to restore mankind into fellowship with Him. He had to set into motion the preparation to send His only Begotten son to the world. No one else could have the strength or the power to take the sins of the world upon Him AND defeat Satan in his own lair.
Jesus came when the fullness of time had come(when all the preparations were complete). He lives as a man and showed us how to live as redeemed people of God by His(unnecessary for Him) examples. He prepared the hearts of His followers to see the fulfillment of Prophecies that he was and would fulfill.
Then at the perfect time, He laid down His life freely to break not only the hearts of His followers but of the Chosen People and the Romans. He entered Hell itself(on Holy Saturday), defeated Satan with the power of His sacrifice, and took the keys of death and Hell from him.
He rose triumphant, having defeated death and walked the earth for a short time in His glorified body and then prepared His disciples for the coming of the Holy Spirit and rose up into heaven in their presence to show them what awaited them.

John chapter 17, Jesus' prayer prior to his death.
vs 1, 4: it was to Glorify his Father, Jehovah.
vs 6, 26: to make known God's Name, Jehovah
vs 3: So that people would know the only true God, Jehovah.
(Same as the order of the Lord's prayer)
After Jehovah is sanctified, then vs 6 discusses salvation of man.
Satan did more than just caused Adam and Eve to sin.
He called into question Jehovah's right to rule
and to decide for people what is right and wrong.
In the book of Job, Satan called into question the reason man worship God, and that God basically bribed men into worshiping him.
Jesus' life and death provided answers to all the slander and lies that Satan put forth.

According to what I was taught, it was to save mankind from evil
by being sacrificed as payment for the sins of the world.
What I think is.( oversimplified)....A man tried to make a difference by teaching love ,compassion, forgiveness.
That was his personal mission
He went across the grain of the establishment.
They killed him.
His followers thought that was his plan.
They started the cult which is still around.
Think he would be happy with what his mission has turned into?
Leave the poor guy alone.

He wanted to start the ball rolling since Plan A failed with Adam and Eve and they rebelled By making us human he doesnt have to give eternal life like he did with angels ONE THIRD OF THE ANGELS REBELLED so he made us flesh so we screw up we can just croak off in hell which is the grave He came so more people could have eternal life and share it with Him...

Jesus Christ's mission to the world was to spread peace and love to his fellow man to have them believe their father in heaven loved them like they should love their fellow man, Jesus Christ did not convert people to christianity, but for people to live together and to love each other.
