I was just curious, but what was the medal the Bronz star awarded to. Was because of Valor, Heroism? or was it for what duty position you held? I would like to know? What was used for in WW2, Korea, Vietnam,etc...? Please help.

The bronze, as well as the silver stars are awarded for valour in combat, although any "heroic act" may be enough for its award. To my knowledge, these are only awarded during combat/wartime situations, so if someone is wearing either of these stars, he or she deserves your respect.

Also, the Silver Star is a higher award than the Bronze Star.

The only higher awards are the Navy Cross (and the equivalents for the Air Force and Army), and the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The Bronze Star, along with a number of other medals are awarded for Valor, Heroism, acts beyond the call of Duty, etc. Besides the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, The Navy/Marine medal, The Medal of Honor, plus others are awarded for such activities. Each medal is awarded for various activities during combat, and the degree in which the act is performed.

The Medal of Honor is the highest medal awarded and it usually entails an extreme act of courage and self sacrifice. Many of it's recipients lost their lives in earning this Medal of Honor. When it is awarded posthumously, it is generally awarded to a family member.

The Navy/Marine medal is the highest award earned by this branch of service, except the medal of Honor which is awarded by Congress. The Silver star is yet another high honor for Valor - Duty - Heroism and considered one of the highest honors bestowed on a recipient. The Bronze Star, is seen most often because a greater number are awarded this medal. Only those who distinguish themselves as true leaders and heroic warriors are the recipient of this combat medal.

Other medals and ribbons are awarded for many other activities, but these are the medals for outstanding service, sacrifice and heroism.

The Bronze Star Medal (BSM) is awarded by the individual services (army, navy, airforce, marines, coast guard) for meritorious action during "an action, not involving aerial flight, against an enemy of the United States." This does not necessarily include Heroic or Valorous action, i.e. the person may be in no danger but might do something of exceptional ability as to be considered meritorious. Should the action be considered Valorous, the award comes with a "V" device on the ribbon to denote the combat valor.

The BSM is the next higher medal above the Army Commendation Medal (ARCOM) which is awarded for "Commendable" actions (as opposed to the "Meritorious" or "Valorous" actions of the BSM). The ARCOM can come with a "V" device as well, for valorous actions that are of a level less than worthy of the BSM.

The BSM is just below the Silver Star Medal, which is awarded for "extraordinary heroism or valor".

Bronze Star is a service award for combat. BSM can be award for completing a combat tour or doing your job in a combat zone. During the Balkan air campaign the Air force had awarded the BSM to people working on the flight line in Germany and the US. If the service or act was under more heroic circumstances a "V" device for valor may be awarded.

Much more significant and less common is the Silver Star award...

In my unit in Iraq all enlisted people got Army Commendation Medals for serving a full year in Iraq. All of the officers got Bronze Stars regardless of duty positions or time in country. Even our chaplain got a Bronze Star and he was not allowed to carry a weapon.

They are only awarded during war, or combat operations - but not necessarily while under fire. One can be awarded a Bronze Star for heroic effort. If your action occurs while under enemy fire, than you will be awarded the Combat "V" for Valor to go with your Star.
