An onion is an onion, garlic is garlic.....the shallot, though closely related to the onion grows in a bunch like garlic. When sliced you can see that it has the layers like an onion. The taste is milder but deeper than an onion with garlic undertones.....

Shallots Vs Onions

An onion is an onion, a garlic is a garlic and a shallot is a shallot. That about as clear as mud, isn't it?

Actually the confusion about whether a shallot is an onion or a garlic is because of the flavor. It has a sweet onion with a hint of garlic flavor. Therefore, some believe its an onion while others say garlic.

Now use the info in the second paragraph and paragraph one makes sense.

"Shallots are just onions with a higher opinion of themselves."

The flavor of the shallot is frequently described as a cross between sweet onion and garlic.

Shallots have a brownish thin skin, and somewhat resemble garlic in shape.

Shallots as the word is commonly used, or eschallot in some countries.
Unlike onions where each plant normally forms a single bulb, shallots form clusters of offsets, rather in the manner of garlic.

Shallots are extensively cultivated and much used in cookery, in addition to being pickled. Their flavor is perhaps more delicate than that of onions, perhaps more intense. Certainly it is distinctive. Finely sliced deep-fried shallots are used as a condiment in Asian cuisine. Shallots tend to be considerably more expensive than onions, especially in the United States where they are almost exclusively imported from France.

Onion in the general sense can be used for any plant in the genus Allium but used without qualifiers usually means Allium cepa, also called the garden onion. Onions (usually but not exclusively the bulbs) are edible with a distinctive strong flavour and pungent odour which is mellowed and sweetened by cooking. They generally have a papery outer skin over a fleshy, layered inner core. Used worldwide for culinary purposes, they come in a wide variety of forms and colours.

Shallots are smaller and milder than onions but taste and look similar to red onions. You can substitute one for the other.
