Whatever you do, if you go more than two shades darker than your highlights, fill the highlights in with something to get their base color close to the rest of your hair- the darker dye won't take in your highlights if you don't. You will end up with different colors of hair.
If you are worried about doing something too drastic, I would reccomend going 2 to 3 shades darker than what you have now. If you are cool with that, next time go a bit darker...just take baby steps so you don't do something you can't fix.
Or, you could have your hair stylist do it, and they would know what to do with it.

Go to a professional...highlights are very difficult to color over. It may take a couple times to get it all back to just 1 color. also skin doesnt say a whole lot when choosing a darker color...whats your complexion? are you warmer or cooler colored? Like are you more olive or pink? Whats your natural color? Whats your eye color? Those are the few things to consider when chosing a darker shade. Like me...I have olive tan skin and dark brown eyes. So when I went from medium brown to black it looked natural. If I were a little more pale and had light colored eyes it would have looked totally fake. So there are some things to consider. Also your hair has natural undertones that will come through. My hair allthough brown naturally...it has red undertones so when I color it black those red undertones definately show through.

What color is your hair now? I would go for a caramel-y golden brown color (alla Eva Longoria). Lots of stars are dyeing their hair that color now, and I think it looks great with tan skin. It's not super dark or dramatic, so it shouldn't turn out looking bad.

well if you want to dye your hair i suggest you go to a hair salon and let them do it, dont buy anything from a drug store or whatever because the color fades and your highlights will show, not saying that if you get it done at a hair salon they wont show because ive had mine dyed there and you can see my highlights but not as much as before from when i dyed it on my own. so now i have to let them grow out but, i suggest a dark brown color, not too dark but not too light yano?

It's best to match a color with your skin tone. If you olive skin tone, you can wear warm colors. If you have pink in your skin tone then you should wear cool tones. It's best to go to a professional and ask them what colors look best with your skin tone.

since it's your first time, you really shouldn't try and change your hair colour drastically... something more subtle will get you used to the process and if you don't like it in the end, it won't take as long for it to return to your natural haircolour rather than, say, midnight black which would take much, much longer. good luck =)

A medium brown, you don't want to go too dark, and you don't want it to be too light. A light to medium brown should do just fine.
