My best recommendation would be King Fortis the Brave

It's about a pair of twelve-year-old twins that are pulled into a magical land where they find themselves caught in the middle of a struggle for control of the realm.

It's full of humor and adventure and is really a fun book. I recommend it to my students and have had some who really hate reading come back all excited after this book.

It also has a couple of strong female characters that are excellent role models for young girls.

Perfect for an 11-year-old.

Not to scare you away, but honestly: the best book I ever read, cover to cover, several times, hands down - the bible. Folks think it's this big serious book with do's and don'ts for your life, but it's so much more than that. It's the story of a people and its relationship with God, as told through various authors throughout the years, vicariously represented through certain key figures. It is brilliant and absolutely fascinating. You have war, gang rape, incest, miracles galore, forgiveness, compassion, heroism, bravery, cowardice, betrayal - it's the best damn thing you're ever gonna read in your life, and it's life changing stuff too. I cry often when I read certain parts. The caring, love, patience and compassion of God for His people. I can't tell you an example, there are too many. Do bear in mind that it's not one long book, it's numerous little books bound together. What's more, the most recent parts of it were written some 2,000 years ago, by people of a different culture, so the language and sentence structure is not what you're used to. For instance, back then - ideas concepts and sentences were often repeated, so you find Genesis Chapter 1 repeated all over again, two chapters later. Still - stick with it. It'll change your life, and will keep you reading for months, at least. Here's a quickie breakdown:

Old Testament - (as in "the old Covenenant between God and Man").

The first half, give or take, of the old testament, is historical in nature. The beginning of the world, the creation of Man by God, their relationship, Israel's stewardship by various prophets (messengers of God), then judges, then kings. It's my favorite part.

Then you have the poetic readings. Odes, poems, psalms - that kind of thing. Psalms being the longest, probably most of which were written by a very just man who loved God - David (of David and Goliath fame). He was King of Israel but still sinned gravely against God. Then the book of Proverbs, Song of Songs etc... The you have the prophetic writings. Bunch of prophets speak of what was, what is and what will be. They speak of God's growing anger with his people, His master plan for redeeming them through the Savior is to come - Jesus - etc. Good stuff. A bit murky at certain parts. After the prophets - BANG: New Testament, as in "The New Covenant Between God and Man" - covenant through Jesus the Christ. First four books of the new testament are the gospels - the books relaying the life and times of Jesus. Brilliant stuff. Then you have the Acts of the Apostles, which was written purportedly by Luke, who wrote... the Gospel according to Luke! It tells of the growth of Christianity after the death and resurrection and ascension into heaven, of Jesus. The trials and tribulations of the early apostles. Then you have the pauline letters: various letters written by the apostle Paul, an early and zealous preacher of his time, during his travels through various communities, indeed countries, to evangelize. A few more letters by some of Jesus' apostles and disciples - Peter, John, James and what not - then Revelations. Revelations is the Mystery Closer. Most people still don't agree with what it's supposed to be. The disciple John wound up on an island some time before his own passing, and there he had visions of heaven, among other things. My answer is getting way long! I'm sorry - read the book! It'll change your life!

Happy reading!
