Because they feel "minor sins" can't harm them as badly as breaking a "major commandment" like murder, in the long run, because they can always repent later.

The first thing that someone should be considering is whether the idea of sin is actually real.
If God is supposed to be perfect how could She have made anything or anyone that wasn't.
Think about it. The idea of sin assumes certain things about God that seem highly unlikely.
All this talk about sin sounds like a bunch of nonsense to me.
First it assumes a God who is too incompetent to organize a simple educational field excursion and figure out a way to get all of the students home safely.
How likely is this that God would not be smart enough to come up with a plan for our salvation that is going to work?
It also assumes that God must have created us imperfect if we are sinners.
One might assume that God would be able to create someone perfect each and every time if he chose to. Assuming God is capable of this, then it follows logically that we must be perfect creations if we are actually creations of this perfect God.
Unless of course you are saying that God chose to create us imperfect.
If God created us imperfect then anything that may go wrong is Gods fault, not ours. This seems a bit illogical at best so I think that we need to assume that What God creates would have to be perfect.
If this is the case and Gods creations are perfect, then nothing that we can do could change what God created perfect and make it imperfect unless we think that we are more powerful than God is.
How likely is it that we the creation could be more powerful than the creator. I personally find this idea somewhat amusing, and a bit absurd.
Religion tells us that God is perfect. If this is true then it could hardly be logically for Gods creations to be considered to be anything less than perfect.
If this is the case then Nothing that we can ever do could possibly change this perfection that God willed, unless we were so powerful that our choices could override and change the will of God.
How likely is that????
Think about it.
The idea of sin is simple nonsense; a lie made up about God by religion.

I think the issue you are dealing with is not smoking and drinking. I think the deeper issue you are angry about is hypocrasy. Yet, what makes you angrier than the hypocrasy is that such people defy your sense of church. I am only guessing that you are angry because your statements contain bold fonts and exclamation points. You are angry because you believe a church is only for the perfect. Yet, remember the words of Christ to the Pharisees, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick." And so it is with His body the Church. It is there we meet Christ (our physician) with our sins (lillnesses) whether it be disease, depression, smoking, and alcoholism. So, a church is supposed to have sinners within it.
If you believe that Christians go to church because they are perfect, then you must study a little more about the church and its purpose. However, I warn you as a brother, that if you still hold to your position and cannot learn to be merciful and helpful towards sinners (like I who smoke and go to church), then you may be suffering from something more serious than my cigarettes, which is pride.
Also, there is nothing wrong with drinking. We all drink when we are thirsty. It is natural. Remember in the Scriptures it states in Psalm 104:15, that God gives us wine to gladden our hearts. God gives us wine through the gift of creation and our human ingenuity. We see that creation can be used to serve as a balm to ease our suffering here on earth. And God allows this without reservation. And let us not forget in the book of Sirach 40:20, that wine and music gladden the heart. So, drinking is not sinful and can provide us with a happiness.
And so, there is nothing wrong with drinking wine or strong drink. However, there is something morally wrong with getting drunk and in being drunk becoming a burden to self and neighbor. Moderation is the key to enjoying alcohol with respect. As St. Augustine is credited to say about drinking, "Drink until hilarity, and then NO MORE!"
May the Lord bless and keep you. May He let the light of His face shine upon you.
God's and your beast of burden

Dear ilove,
You have to remember that Jesus changes people from the inside/out. Your question is like asking why do people disobey God?
Different people are at different places with God- the important thing is that they are going to church and heading in the right direction and they have people to come alongside them and help them go in the right direction.
Drinking is not a sin unless done in excess. Although we do have to be 21 and mindful of our reasons as well as if drinking is causing others to stumble.
One thing we see about Jesus is that He always met people where they were at but never left them there. So instead of being upset with smokers and drinkers- get to know some of them and find out how you can replace their smoking and drinking with something even better- JESUS!
In Luke Jesus says that it is the sick who need a physician. The church is not a gallery of perfect saints- but a hospital for hurting sinners saved by God's grace,
Hope that helps,
Nickster

Some of the worse sinners walked amoung Jesus. We are not to judge people. God knows each person and what they stand for. We are to do as we think God wants us to do and there are people who are good doers and those who may lack a lot. There are good and bad among all men and all that I can say is that we are not to judge what is ok for a person to do who is attending church or what they profess to be. There are many churches because not all people translate the Bible in the same way.

Actually, smoking and drinking--although very harmful when done to excess or for the wrong reasons are extremely bad for you--are NOT technically listed as sins in the Bible. The Bible does tell us not to be drunk (Eph, Prov, I Cor, etc.). And it does say, as you mentioned, that our bodies are the temple of God (I Cor) and that we should not allow ourselves to lose control of our bodies (2 Pet). That being said, whether something is spelled out specifically or alluded to or not mentioned at all is not the final litmus test. What should be our guide is the destruction or abuse of "God's temple" and the perception of those who are looking at us as examples.

If Jesus turned water to wine--then I take that as a sign that drinking is not a sin.....
neither is it ever condemned in the bible to drink
it is condemned to get 'drunk'
Paul told Timothy to 'stop drinking only water, and take a little wine, because of your stomach and frequent illness'
YOU ARE IN ERROR BECAUSE YOU DO NOT KNOW THE SCRIPTURE....
However...smoking I am not sure about....I quit smoking cigarettes (5 yr habit) when I became a disciple of Jesus. I WAS A SLAVE TO IT.... but occasionally I will smoke a cigar these days.... BUT I'M NOT MASTERED BY IT.....

Over-eating and not exercising are also not treating our bodies as temples. Does it upset you to see overweight and out of shape people at church too?
Maybe it might be helpful to think of the church as a hospital for sinners.

God,church, and faith is for the ppl who arent perfect. so when ppl become holy and worthy and perfect like God. thats when there will be no one in church. being a christian is knowing that ur not perfect and God doesnt aspect us to be perfect, were not capable of it. thats y he says all we have to do is confess our sins, basically admit were not perfect and we need God in our lives and we are forgiving of our sins. but the kicker is learning from ur mistakes and trying ur hardest not to repeat the same sins over and over again. theres nothing wrong with falling and getting back up. its when we fall and dont try to get up that pisses God off.

SMoking and Drinking is not a sin. Jesus drank wine with his apostles during last supper. Smiking didn't come into fashion till about 15th or 16th century, but it sure never mentions anywhere that smoking is sin.
They are both bad for your health though.
