I mean getting punched over and over and over. Where your face is becoming a bloody mess and facial bones are cracking and breaking apart. I have seen bystanders let fights go on for too long. One of the worst things to see in human nature. Who are these types of folks that don't know when to step in?

Threeof easiest technique to describe over on line are:

-Try to wiggle up a bit and wrap your arms around the opponent's waist and roll so you're on the top.

-Try to slide a hand under their leg as quickly as possible and push them upward with their leg.

-Try to turn onto your side and push on the person thigh and hope you slides out from between their thighs enough to sit up and get up.

However this is the worse situtation to be in. This is what happen if you don't do at least some ground fighting training.

I say you cover up as best you can (brace against the forehead so that you don't end up punching yourself when the other guy hits your arms), tuck your chin, and try your best to wiggle out into the guard or otherwise put some distance between you and the puncher. Anything but turning over and giving him your back.

And the guys who don't know when to step in are probably guys who don't feel that it's their job to save you, maybe because they figure you chose to enter the fight so it's up to you to exit it yourself. I think the better view is to conduct yourself such that any bystander who witnesses the encounter can see that you resorted to violence only as a last resort or had no choice, i.e., that you're the "good guy." Which is why humility and a good sense of humor are pretty much the best self defense tools ever encountered - they help you avoid situations like the one you described, and give you the moral high ground to do what you have to do if you're forced into such a situtation..

If by pinned you mean that your opponent is on top of you holding you down than you can buck your hips in an attempt to throw your opponent off of you. As far as the type of folks that are seeing this and not stepping in... They are scared. That is why they don't do anything. They don't want to be next. At the very least, though, you would think that they could pull out their cell phones and call 911.

Avoid fighting will solve this problem. There are jerks every where you go and looking for trouble the question is are you willing to accept his trouble and fight or avoid and walk away. The real tough guys don't get into fights it's the weak insecure ones who need to prove something that cause the fights in most cases.

they should try to "shrimp" out or roll out. A martial artist should study ground techniques, even if it is not part of their martial art.
Most importantly don't let yourself ever get in this situation in the first place.
To counter wrestlers you have to control the range of the fight.
If they are going to rush you then you need to move. Don't let anyone get a hold of you. I notice grapplers have their faces open to strikes when they are trying to take you to the ground. I think this works for them because when they grab someone human instinct makes them grab back when they should be striking that unprotected grill.

One thing about your question concerns me. You state that you have seen bystanders let fights go on for too long. If you are watching doesn't that make you one of the bystanders?

Start laughing really hard. Spit blood on you opponent(s). Laugh again repeatedly. Spit repeatedly. And then repeat this, "You don't know where I've been. YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE I'VE BEEN." (ala Fight Club). Hopefully, your attacker might back away thinking you might have some sort of communicable disease. Good luck.

Yell for help and let them do it cause I mean if you are pinned then there is really no getting out so there is nothing you can do.
