This is basically a manufacturing preference. It is less costly to make the square boxes than the round. The square ones are more sturdy in order to hold the pizza without falling apart.

Those are just leftover boxes from back in the day when they used to make square pizzas.

Chef Ed, is 100% right. It all has to do with the manufacturer, the corrugating machine that runs the box, is automated to adjust to lenght x width x lenght. If is was round a die must be made and that is too costly, it might cost more than the actual run of the box.

WHEN THEY SHIP THE BOXES TO THE PIZZA SHOP THEY COME AS A FLAT PIECE CARDBOARD AND HAVE TO BE ASSEMBLED BY THE PIZZA BOY. I WOULD THINK IT WOULD BE HARD TO MAKE A ROUND BOX OUT OF A SQUARE PIECE OF CARDBOARD. ALSO IT STACKS BETTER ON THE SHELF.

If it's round, then, it's no longer a box, it may fallinto the concept of a container (These are round, but more expensive, sice there made from different materials)
