My 7 yr old siamese got very sick,no eat/drink & lumps on her tummy, we found were filled with pus as 1 exploded, took to vet & they said it was mammalary gland infected. Total cost of everything they wanted to do was $975, which I don't have, so for about $100, they gave me 1 week of med/office visit & a shot.said to watch careful & try to get her to take food/water. At end of week much better, so I took rx to regular pharmacy to save $$(cheaper by $25) the bottle they gave me was 4 times the size the vet ordered. So after the next week of meds like vet ordered, I had lots left. She was all better, but now another lump is here. The rx is amox tr-k clv 200-28 5/5 sulek & says discard after 10 days, which would have been 8/14. Pharmacy won't refill without another vet visit, and I have not enough money for that for another month. I want to know if this med is dangerous for kitty or just pharmacy way of making more money? Please help us.No free services in my town to get her help.

If the medication is the same dosage as the one your vet gave then the medication is fine to give. After 10 days you are to discard it because it has been reconstituted and it won't be as affective. So either continue to give without the same affect or try and find some money to get your cat back to the vet to get better.

I have used this medicine before. It cannot be used after 10 days...it goes bad after that. This is a version of amoxicillin...and needs to be handled very carefully. Even if you got it directly from the vet, they would need to see her again before giving you more. Do not use what's left of it. I hate to say it, but if you really can't afford another vet visit...look at a farm supply store for something similar. Some feed/supply stores will carry antibiotics that can be dispensed without prescription. You will likely have to buy more than you need, and it will be VERY risky to give your cat anything you could buy there (they are typically for cows and horses)...but it may help her. If you resort to this, please try to find someone knowledgeable about those products before selecting one. I would really recommend seeing if your vet or another vet will work out a payment plan and only trying to buy otc products as a last resort.

That's a sad story indeed. The medicine was given to clear up the infection so enough is enough. It will work or not. If not another antibiotic may be needed.

It sounds like your cat has mammary cancer, an aggressive cancer in cats which might be helped with radical surgery, chemo and/or radiation. Very expensive way to go and not a big chance of buying you much more time with your cat.

My neutered male applehead Siamese had that cancer. By the time it was discovered it had metastasized to his lungs and though they tried to draw off fluids, he could not breathe and I had to euthanize him just three years ago this weekend.

You need to watch your cat carefully and if she is suffering please release her humanely.

I'm not sure that it would make her sicker, probably after the 10 days it isn't as potent. I had to give zithromax to my cat once and it was a weird schedule, every day for 3 days then every other day for 30 days. and the bottle said to use before a certain date and the pharmacist said that as long as you keep it in the refrigerator it should be fine. I'm guessing that this is a liquid med.

Simply call the vet that treated your cat and tell them, the same problem has occured in another area and would they call the script into that pharmacy.

amox is like amoxacillian for people, we would keep it for a month MAX! i was told it actually has eggs in it, but you cant believe what you hear...call the vet, and ask why it says discard after 10 days and if its ok to give it to your kitty, they cant charge you for asking

Call the vet and ask him to refill the prescription.

It goes bad, loses its effectiveness and can do alot of harm after it expires. Your vet may make some money off of you, but they are there for the better of your pet - toss it please!

If it was liquid. Then its not dangerous but it loses its potency. It still should help but its not as strong as when you first bought it.
