I have dreads and I see that a lot here too. Maybe they are thinking of dreads on white ppl. Where as black ppl's hair texture (kinky, nappy or well coiled) is more conducive for growing dreads it isn't that easy for white ppl's hair (usually straight) and I have seen a lot of white ppl doing different, weird and sometimes funky (not washing their hair) things to get them. Some ppl are ignorant and just would rather stereotype or generalize than interact and learn about other cultures.

Personally, I like dreads. I don't think they look dirty at all. I have even known a few white people who have them, but I think they look better on black people than on white people. As far as a lot of white people not understanding hair care of other races, it's probably because they are too sheltered. If they get out a little more and make friends with people who are black, Asian, hispanic, etc. they will learn more about different cultures, and they will also learn that all of us have more similarities than differences.

Some people are ignorant. You cant change that. I would say people are judgeful. Most people know at least one ethnic person. Not everyone is the same, and that goes for hair to. I wouldnt worry to much about it, people can be cruel. Just because it would not be their choice, makes it a bad choice. . If you know what I mean. There are some people who do understand.. As for me, It doesnt always look bad. I have very curly hair, and I cant wash mine everyday, or it will get dry. As far as im told your not supposed to anyways. There are natual oils in hair. Good luck with this!

Thank you for stating some. The only understanding I have ever found in any prejudice is ignorance. I have been guilty of prejudice in the past even towards my own race (Caucasian). A lot of the time as humans we make opinions of people places & things without having any knowledge of it. My personal opinion is predjuices is caused from fears. If we put effort into learning about people, places & things before forming opinions this would be a much nicer place to live. I have heard many times . We as humans fear what we do not know or understand.

I don't think dreads are dirty though I admit they do kind of look like it. But I've never had dreads so I can't say they are dirty when I've never had them. Believe me! White people DO have very dry and dirty hair. We are well aware of it. Just watch any hair product commercial and you will see what I'm talking about. I understand completely. :)

No one understands the different personal care needs of someone of a different race - unless they have a VERY close friend of that race. People just don't talk about this kind of stuff, except to start dirty rumours, it seems. I never have known how dreads are made, and never thought of them as 'dirty', but I went to a school that was pretty racially diverse. I remember getting into a discussion I thought was funny one time about "ashy elbows" - it seems like a very important thing to not have them in your race, but in our race, I don't think elbows are even a blip on the personal care radar. Like I said, we have different personal care issues. Maybe we ought to have an open forum on these questions for the curious, and it would end any silly speculation?

Because as you know ANYONE that doesnt wash their hair everyday starts looking dirty. NOT JUST BLACKS.
The reason why MOST people think dreads are dirty is because they LOOK dirty! Take a step back and stop making this a racial issue. If a white guy has dreads they dont look less dirty!
Really not hard to understand but it is what it is!

as a white person who used to have dreds, and lived in a place where I was the ONLY white girl around for three blocks, and the rest of the kids were either black or hawaiian, samoan, japanese etc. I learned that different nationalities have different needs in thier hair. I think some people who get dreds, and then don't care for them are what gives some people the misconception of them being dirty. My friends had them and kept them clean and they were very nice and I ended up getting them too.
Every body has different hygiene routines and some people don't keep them as clean as others.

This is just my experience... those I have been in close enough contact with who do the dread thing do let them get a bit on the gross side...look and smell wise... don't like to work close with that... that goes for any who have the more "excentric"or "exotic" hair... regardless of the race... men espacialy need to be more aware of the "presence" they present when working close...But women can get way to carried away on the hair thing. And all of the"stuff" that is needed to hold all that way out hair in place just flat out stinks.... then add all the other smelly stuff so many seem to like to bath themselves in... TOOOOmuch
doing your own thing is one thiing...but going against the general culture... regardless of the race issue... will cause one to be looked at differently... Whether it be dreads, geen, purple, spiked, greased, frizzeled or frazzled...

It's a good question. People really just don't know, and have all sorts of screwy ideas.
I'm caucasian, and found that I can't wash my hair every day or I get all sorts of scalp and hair issues. My dandruff cleared up only when I stopped washing my hair so often, exactly the opposite of what everyone told me.
There's a culture of cleanliness that goes waaaayyyyy overboard, and thinks the body is inherently "dirty". I blame the shampoo and soap industry. ("Lather. Rinse. Repeat." - repeat? give me a break! )
