According to the bible, a saint is any believer in Jesus Christ. Of course, the catholics will give you a different definition, probably involving some type of authority from the pope, but I prefer to follow the Word of God.

Scripturally being a saint is a matter of being a believer in Christ and nothing more. Start at Romans 8:29. All beleivers are predestined to be conformed to the image of Christ, and throughout the NT epistles common believers are called saints. Being "canonized" by the Roman church as a subordinate mediator between God and man is something altogether different.

In the Bible, the word "saint" simple meant anyone who had become a Christian. They had been "sanctified" by him. Over time, the church has began to hold up expectional Christians as examples for others, and attached the word "Saint" to their name as a title of respect for their lives and commitment.
Like most things, it became an institution (at least within the Catholic church - not the Protestants), and rules where written on what you have to do to qualify to be a "saint" and a committee exist to vote on the issue, etc.
But originally, it was simple someone who was a Christian.
If you know Jesus, you are a saint, otherwise, you ain't. (Yea, I have to say it LOL).

Steps to Sainthood
In the 10th century, Pope John XV developed an official canonisation procedure, which went through some revisions in the ensuing 1,000 years.
The process must begin five years after the candidate's death.
Local bishops investigate the life of the candidate and the findings are sent to the Vatican.
After approval by a panel of theologians and cardinals, the pope proclaims the candidate is "venerable," meaning a role model of Roman Catholic virtues.
The next step is beatification if it is determined by the church that the candidate is responsible for a miracle after his or her death.
Finally, for the designation of saint, the church must certify proof of a second posthumous miracle.

Copy Christ. That probably doesn't sound like such an unusual comment - until you consider: I'm not technically a christian. I'm Taoist.
Christ was tolerant and forgave. He didn't have to make himself holy just by having an opinion. He practiced something other than just saying words or picking out a certain box of thinking.
As far as what most people in church do ... well, that's another story. Many people think the fact they hold a personal opinion makes the differance between God's favor and going to hell.
My advice: COPY THE CHRIST, NOT THE FOLLOWER.

Yeh, the most common use of the word nowadays is by the Catholics, and they bestow the title on people who do good things for the "church". Well, God has a different opinion, and He's all we need to worry about. A saint is a believer

A saint in the NT was just a synonym for a believer in Christ......over the years Saint status was conferred on people by the Catholic church for " super christian " attitudes,behaviors,miracles...etc.....
I think this was unfortunate....we believers are all just sinners saved by grace.....I don't mean this as offensive to my Catholic brothers..........I admire many of those who have receive this accolade....St.Francis of Assisi to name just one.....yet this super-christian status is a danger......christian celebrities bother me for the same reason.........our example is Christ....sainthood strikes me as a competition
