"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers".

Emucompboy, consider yourself "smarter than the average bear"! You are absolutely right. Yet all those answerers before you were more than happy to believe there was something novel "wrong with children today" (though some claimed not with THEIR children!)

It's attributed to Socrates, circa 400 B.C.
Some things never change, eh?

Umm excuse me?! I am 12 and i do not have bad manners. And I love authority (I think Military Police are cool) and always respect to my parents, my elders, and my teachers. Yes I love luxury and cross my legs (I do not see what is wrong with that). But I still have manners and I respect people the same way they respect me. Oh and sometimes in school I scold my classmates for not listening to the teacher and I always tell them to appriciate learning. And the teachers LOVE me. And I do not see the point of riseing when an elder enters the room. No one even told me to do that. But I still respect them. So please, do not stereotype all children for having bad manners. Remember we are just children. We still need to learn. And my parents never told me to rise when elders enter the room. AND CHILDREN ARE NOT SERVANTS! THAT IS AGAINST THE LAW.

I have 2 boys 12 and 15. They know better than act like that. A lot of kids have to raise their self because their parents work or there are only 1 parent and they have to work. A lot of parents just flat out don't care or want to be bothered. It is a shame. Kids having kids and no one that knows how to raise them. The schools are awful today. Kids talk back, interrupt the teacher and, are just plain mean. They pick on each other so bad. And nobody does anything about it. I go to both my kids school and volunteer some; it gets pretty bad. Presents have no idea what is going on in our schools. It makes things hard for the good kids. And there are alot of them out there. God bless each and everone of you!

The behaviors of children are usually the reflections of their parents. It depends on how one is being brought up and their family background. It is not so much to do with educational background though it plays a part too because I came across with people who so-called professionals but are really rude. So it really depend on one's integrity and good characters. It is common here that parents sent children to childcare and children send parents to oldfolks home care when they grow up.

You make a good point here, And i agree with you 100%. Yet who is to blame for the kids behavior, the parents? the video games they play or they TV that babysits them all day? What every made the kids turn sour, i hope that every child to opens up there eyes and look around them for the way they treat there parents the siblings and for them self.

I have tried so hard not to let my children develop these bad manners but i find it harder and harder the more they are around these kids that are like that. It use to be you could reprimand you child in public, if you do that now, you get dirty looks. I am disturbed by children who tell their parents to shut up. If my child said that to me......... she would need a dentist. My children can tell me what they would like for me to buy them but they do not demand! How do parents tolerate this crap from their kids?

Gijsbert van Hall, The mayor of Amsterdam, attributed this to Socrates, but there's no evidence that Socrates ever said this

This is what always happens just before the giant Empires collapse. If you doubt, ask where the Greek Empire of Socrates is.
