The Emperor Constantine once sent a letter to his Christian bishops urging them to cease their bickering over matters like the nature of the godhead saying, "Why argue about things the truth of which no man can know? It is unbecoming to holy men to engage in vain speculations." Whatever your religion, it's wise counsel. There is only speculation regarding the meaning of Alif, Lam, Mim. Some assume this is simply the way that Surahs which deal with the beginning, middle and end of man's spiritual history are labeled. Some claim it is the name of Allah. I would not be shocked to find out they are the initials of the scribe who took down the words rather than mystic symbols as some assume.

The Quran has many plain teachings. Let those with nothing worthwhile to do argue over the meaning of things which no man can know.

Many chapters in the quran start with letters that don't make up a word. Alif lam min are Arabic letters equivalent to English letters; A. L. M . The letters change from chapter to chapter. Amount could be from one to five. Now these are purposely put into the Quran by Allah (swt) and no one knows the meaning behind these letters except Allah (swt).

Possibly something muhammed came up with during a drunken stupor. He was a false prophet that murdered, lied, and was a pedophile. The quran is not in its original form as all the draft copies were burnt when the final was made with punishment of death if you kept the old ones, and all this almost 150 years after muhammed. they are simply arabic letters that do not make up a word. although Allah SWT has this combination and others in the Quran. Allah SWT is the only one with the answer to that.
