Check consumer reports. Also, a good place to find info on a car is the Autobytel forum. If people have had issues with cars, they'll be happy to share it.

All in all, I'd avoid the Land Rover. British cars seem to have poor reliability, and you're talking about a car that's already 10 years old.

That car does have problems. Keep in mind that almost anytime it breaks it will cost to fix it. I work in the auto field and we call the Disco the $2000 dollar car because that's what it cost to get it going again. Most of the problems are not do it your self stuff. Axle leaks ABS pumps, electrical shorts. All in all one of the few cars I would avoid. All cars have pros and cons but as great a 4 wheel drive car as it is and the styling is awesome the repairs make this one to pass on.
hocky 06 the motor in theat car was a Buick V8 that rover bought years ago and have modified over the years.

The older Discoveries are indeed British cars. The reliability is not so good.

I've heard of some strange issues with them even when they redesigned it as Discovery II where the brake cable snapped, transmissions fail, not up to their tow ratings, etc.

Its strange that the Discovery used to use a Buick inline 6 and now its owned by Ford as the LR3.

Dont buy an used one is my opinion. Just too many reliability issues.

i have owned several brits i also have been in the auto parts biz for 20 + years nearly all LR parts have to come from the dealer at high$ many special order taking days to months to arrive
if you can tolerate that, the LR is a great vehicle
personally , i would steer clear unless your love for the vehicle outways the downside
there are other 4wd vehicles that will do the same thing and parts are readily available
call a prts store and ask for some random parts and you will see what i mean good luck

My friend owns and runs a Rolls-Royce repair shop. He says British cars are junk. He advises me to buy American; they are the best cars made.

I like the Freelanders myself. You shouldn;t have any toruble they are not like the LandRovers of the '80's.

Like german cars you will pay more for repairs and because it is a truck the tires will cost a LOT more.
