Hi there...Common odours that are effective deterrents for cats are:
Citronella works best for cats as well as citrus scents (primarily towards cats), cayenne pepper, coffee grounds, pipe tobacco, lavender oil, lemon grass oil, citronella oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, and mustard oil.
"Havahart's Cat Repellent" uses capsaicin pepper and oil of mustard as its active ingredients. It repels by both taste and odor, has a lemon scent.
Every animal responds differently to each of these. Some will not be phased by them and others will be quite revolting.
For training purposes they are applied on items that are to encourage avoidance behaviours and not for use with a squirt bottle as they could harm the eyes or respiratory system. Test each substance and observe to see which works as a deterrent so that accidental injestion does not occur as some could then be fatal.

Try putting a couple of moth balls in the dirt. My Grandma lives out in the county and has a problem with stray cats and thats what she uses to keep them away & it works! They are very cheap, and you can find them at Wal-mart, Kmart, or at the dollar store even. They also work for keeping bugs away. Put a one in each corner of your closets. They are a little smelly at first then the smell goes away. Good luck with the cat poo.

Pile bricks on the dirt area.
Okay, not a good idea.
Toss a cupful of water at the cat every time you see it. It might get the message. Then again, it might not. Cats are notoriously stupid and stubborn when they want to be (and I am a cat lover -- I just bury the poo and plant tomatoes there every summer).

Buy a bag of kitty litter (the kind that smells good to a cat) and sprinkle it over the area you do want it to *ahem* dump on. That'll train the cat to only do "it" in certain places.
You won't just be protecting your yard, but the whole neighourhood's too.

I can't think of anything that won't harm a cat. You might ask a vet. I know that if you put moth balls in the area the cat will stay away (the downside is the cat will lose it's sense of smell so that isn't a good thing.)

if you don't already try putting up a fence. And not the type fence where the cat can jump over but a gate like you would find on a school yard.

There's a product you can sprinkle on the area that has a smell that cats don't like. I don't remember the name.
A motion activated sprinkler has worked for me.

Maybe you should put up a mini fence just big enough so the cat can't get in or jump over to *go* on your property. GOOD LUCK!
