the requirement are, if you live in the USA, that you must call local shelters and ask if someone has been looking for the dog.. and you must run an ad in the classified section (they are free) under lost and found..If no one claims the dog within 21 days, he is legally yours.

You say you've had it for a month and although it didn't have a collar on it still probably belonged to somone. I would give it one more shot to find the owner - think of how awful you would feel if your dog went missing. Try putting an ad in the newspaper around your area. You can keep it short just put in the type of dog what it looks like and when you found it and your number. See if anyone calls you while its running and if not, then I would say keep it. If you are providing it a good home and food, then it is better for it to be with you then on the streets alone and cold and hungry. Good luck!

It has been at ur house for a month and nobody has found it and if u have watched the papers in the lost and found by all means keep the poor dog, sounds like it just wants a home with food and someone to love it. Can you financially care for it? If so definately keep it.
You have a great heart to take in an unwanted stray. Good luck

I wouldn't get my hopes up quite yet. Sometimes people fail to put signs up because the dog is microchipped and they feel that they will be contacted through this means instead of through signs or advertisements.

Before settling down for good, take it to a local shelter or veterinarian and ask to have it scanned for a microchip. If there is a chip in place, then you are obligated to contact the prior owners and let them know that you have the dog and that he is safe.

You should also contact your local animal control and/or Humane Society to see if anyone has reported a dog missing that matches the description of the one you found. Let the workers there know that you have a stray beagle in your possession, but that you'd like to keep it at your home until it is claimed. After a time frame of about two weeks, if the animal is not claimed, then they typically ask if you'd like to keep the dog, or turn him in to be adopted.

It seems as though you've become pretty attached to the dog, but please remember that he may still belong to someone that misses him. Try to imagine what it must be like for the owner to wonder what happened to their dog--if he was hit by a car, hurt by another animal, or picked up by authorities. Please make a true effort to find the previous owners before settling down with your new pup.

What about what the dog wants? The dog has chosen you as its pack leader. You don't even have to keep it. It's already there to stay. So keep taking care of it.

It shows up and stays for a month when it can leave, it let's you take care of it, it lets you wash it, it lets you feed it, it lets you put a collar on it, it sleeps with your dog, your dog accepts it, you like it, it acts cute for you, you name it, it likes you, it likes your dog, it likes your house. Signs of abuse, no flyers, no tag, no collar, nobody looking. On and on...

Believe me, staying outside your door for a month says, "Please let me in!" Like it or not, this dog is keeping you, so you may as well keep it also. It isn't looking for a place to go to, it's where it wants to go. Get a tag! :)

I have had that happen to me a few times. One time the dog actually got stole and then relaesed on the highway where I founf it. I knew it had an owner because its teeth were clean its nails were clipped and it looked as though it was taken care of, so I tried my best to find the owner and did. But, the second time it happend it was two border collar puppies who were dirty skinny and aparently had been left there, probly by a farmer who didnt want them. I still tried to find the owner in case they had run off, but no takers so I gave them to two of my friends and now there happy and heathly. Think of when you founf him/her if it looked as though it was well taken care of. I called the local humane society and thats how I founf the owner of the first bc they come looking for them. I would try that. I know if I lost my dog I would want someone to try to find me, but if you cant find the owner, youve got a great friend.

By law it's probably your dog now anyway. My county has a law that states anyone who feeds an animal for 3 consecutive days is legally the owner.

Keep him and enjoy! He's obviously decided he wants to stay :o)

You should probably check a few more times that no body is missing a dog. Once you have checked a couple times I think it would be ok. But you have to be very sure.

Godd Luck with Bagle! (What a very cute name!)

Both of those answers are spot on. I would add one more thing. Certainly take it to the vet, and when you are there, ask if they can check for tatoos (I know I spelled that wrong!!) or microchips. That plus posters and maybe even an ad is the best you can do. At that point I would say you have a new dog. Love him/her to death!!

I would say keep it. Not to be mean or anything but maybe it was a sign from your grandma saying it would be ok! Keep beagle and take him to the vet right away to get shots and tags!

I would ask at the police station if anyone has reported a dog missing. If you suspect abuse get it checked at the vets. I t also might have a micro chip which the vet can check. Having said all this as a dog lover I would be tempted to keep it but someone might be missing it.
