In the UK - although I cannot speak for all forces, a log is created when a complaint is received. At midnight it starts at number 1 and increases until 1 minute before the next midnight. Therefore most logs numbers are date sensitive. For instance, 543 of 1st September 2006. Obviously, somewhere like Metpol will reach numbers in excess of 10,000 where as smaller forces may only reach 1400 or less.

A crime reference number is when a crime has been reported - normally as a result of a log - and more information is recorded about the crime and these figures are then used for statistics and all that blah .........

Hope this helps!

When you call the police, or go to the station, to report an incident, this initial conversation is LOGGED on the computer.
Hence, a LOG is created with a unique number to the date.

This LOG is then looked at to decide what the correct response should be. For example, if you are reporting a burglary, officers will be despached to your address and the report investigated. If the officers are satisifed a CRIME has indeed been committed, then a CRIME REPORT will be filled out for the offence of burglary. The police are then duty bound to investigate this CRIME until the culprit is arrested, or all lines of enquiry are exhausted.

If, for example, you have called the police to report nuisance behaviour, such as children playing football in the street... then this is not a CRIME, and NO crime report will be filled out as there is nothing to investigate and no criminal to arrest.
Instead it will be LOGGED. Officers may or may not attend and no investigation will be carried out. A LOG NUMBER is simply proof that you hve called the police to complain about something and that the police have been made aware.

Forces should adhere to a Crime Recording Policy. When any incident is reported to police it should be logged on an incident recording system. Initial enquiry will be made in order to establish a crime. If a crime is established then a Crime Report is generated which has a unique Crime Reference number. Technically all crime reports should be enquired into in order to trace and arrest/report a suspect.

Log number is just that like a dog in traffic that an officer is sent to investigate. No crime involved.. A crime number is assigned for specific criminal acts and activity.

You call the police to report a crime - your call is allocated a log number. The police attend, report the crime, investigate it and the crime sheet is allocated a crime number....

Depends on the department or agency. Some will have one or the other or both or none.

If you are in a heavily wooded area they will probably have a log number since they have so many. ;) couldn't help it.
