My female lilac point Siamese is having ear trouble. She's constantly shaking and scratching her left ear. Does it just need cleaning? And how do I do that: rubbing alcohol and cotton swab?

It sounds to me as though your cat may have what is called ear mites. Ear mites are small parasites that live inside the ear and should be treated. They make over the counter ear drops to treat ear mites and these can be used very successfully, however, if it is your first time having ear mites and you do not know for sure I would highly suggest having your cat diagnosed by a vet to make sure.
If on the other hand your cat has dirty ears then yes you just clean them out. With my cats I use a cotton ball moistened with rubbing alcohol but not too moist and just clean out the ear with it until there is no more visible dirt or debris.

No alcohol. It sounds like ear mites....but since you can't afford the vet at the moment, try getting some cleaning solution made specifically for cat's ears. There are q-tips pre-dipped, and wipes that can be purchased at nearly any animal supply store. As soon as you're able to, get her to the vet to have her ears thoroughly examined.

i would not use olive oil because of the fact that's a heavier oil. you should purchase an undemanding, much less high priced ear mite drops at any puppy save (perhaps $5 or much less). persist with the equipment guidelines yet in actuality that's a mild oily air purifier and regularly you purely placed some drops interior the opening of the cats ear and then swab it gently with a sprint lavatory paper or a cotton ball. you do no longer decide to apply Q-tips because of the fact the cat's are rapid and you will not decide to by risk reason inner ear harm by ability of poking the ear. you will observe once you swab the ear which you will get a residue on your swab - probable blackish, or brownish yellow in shade. it fairly is the ear mites and larvae. Swab the section as sparkling as you could. do no longer complication approximately what you could omit because of the fact the oil is a provider and could kill the mites out. you will repeat the approach each and every day (probable, study the learning) till the swab comes sparkling and then repeat weekly to maintain them from coming back. Your cats will love this by ability of how. the 1st drop will lead them to wince yet they in the present day experience releif and funky down as quickly as the air purifier makes touch with their skin. If the cats are old adequate (8 weeks), or once you could arise with the money for it, there is likewise a month-to-month ear mite scientific care that's additionally very low priced and over the counter at maximum puppy shops. that's a one time drop which you utilize on a month-to-month foundation.

They do have over the counter products for ear mites. You could use that if you simply can not afford a vet visit. But would be best to go the vet to be sure it is ear mites. It does sound like it. do you see anything that looks like dirt inside the ear. thats also a sign of ear mites

I am not a "go to the vet right now" responder here and I think you should do that next week.
I was told as a child, "Don't put anything in your ear larger than your elbow."
Do not use alcohol at any rate, very drying and it hurts if anything is open in there. I have never cleaned my six cats' ears. A cue-tip is so much more likely to do damage than good.

If you see dirt and black sticky goop in the ear it would be ear mites.
They make a drop to put in to kill them and you have to use it ofr a week or so.
You can clean the ear with a damp q-tip. I would not use alchol just water and swab out as much as you can.
If you do not see dirt or goop in the ear and she shakes her head and digs at it she may have an innerear infection and will need antibiotice from the vet to clear it up.

you can buy ear wash at wal-mart or any local drug store. The same thing happens to my dog. I have to wash her ears once a day. If the ear mites persist, go to the vet.
Oh just clean the outer ear, don't try to stick a cotton swab in the ear as you may your own.

look for a brown crust inside her ears, if so go to your local pet store and ask for the best ear mite medicine...they say you need to clean the ears before giving the drops...but if you have no experiance i wouldnt clean them, just apply the drops as directed on the bottle and that will take care of it for now, but when you have the funds take her to a vet to make sure the mites are dead and to have the ears cleaned so they dont itch anymore

I wouldn't use any alcohol on her. Sounds possibly like ear mites. Best thing to do is take her to the vet to get her checked out.

Take her into the vet. It could be an ear infection, or ear mites and will need treatment either way. Good luck!
