I think that Kant was nuts. Moral laws derive from evolution, which applies to societies as well as to species: a society's laws are moral if it survives, and are immoral if it does not. We see the prohibitions against murder and theft showing up in almost all societies, because these precepts have obvious survival view to a society. It follows that the notion of a universal moral law is silly: the moral precepts that might be required for life on Alpha Centauri IV [assuming that there is such a planet, and that it has life!] may be totally different from those that work on Sol III. But, if you limit your universe to earth, you can use history, philosophy, and other studies to extract moral tenets that are in that sense universal.

Moral laws are human sourced - whether they ever converge to a state of global agreement is an open question. Would be interesting if it ever becomes possible to engage in dialog with sentient alien life forms to see how universal moral laws are.
