That's the deposit money...Here in Rock Island, a 24-pack of coke is $1.20 cheaper than across the river in Davenport. It's supposed to get people to recycle (thay paid the nickel in the first place) but mostly it just pisses people off.

That is the bottle deposit on the product. You get that money back when you return the empties. Back in the 50's early 60's, there were quite a few states that had bottle deposits. I remember when I was young,,,,much younger,,,,, my friends and I would walk along the highway pulling a wagon. We would look for bottles that people had thrown out their cars. The 16oz got 2cents and the quart bottles got 5cents. We would use the money to buy candy. Not many states do that anymore. I think there are some New England states that do it also.

Yes, but they make you pay for that deposit when you buy it. So it isn't as great as it sounds.
It's on all soda & beer bottles, cans, etc.
